A second-place finish for Austin McDaniel spearheaded a strong weekend for Lee Faulk Racing and Development during the Ice Breaker at Myrtle Beach Speedway on Saturday.
McDaniel started on the front row and took the lead on the opening lap, leading until lap 31 when David Roberts took the lead. A number of lead changes followed, but McDaniel stayed in contention and never ran worse than third throughout the race.
Eventually the battle for the lead came down to McDaniel, Dexter Canipe Jr. and Sam Yarborough, with Yarborough getting the better of McDaniel during a restart with 25 laps left to collect the victory.
McDaniel ended up finishing second after leading 50 laps. He ran his fastest lap of the race on the 100th lap while battling at the front of the field.
“The boys at LFR really brought me a great race car,” said the 25-year-old McDaniel. “Myrtle Beach is always tough because the track chews up tires, but we stayed consistent and fast and we always stayed in striking distance if we weren’t leading. There is no shame in getting beat by Sam, he is one of the best at Myrtle Beach.”
McDaniel wasn’t the only member of the Lee Faulk Racing and Development team to put together a strong performance. His two teammates, Nolan Pope and Michael Faulk, were also competitive throughout the event.
Pope, who was making his debut at Myrtle Beach Speedway, finished eighth among the 35-car starting field. Faulk, a veteran with multiple starts at Myrtle Beach under his belt, finished a solid 11th.
