Xfinity Series leader Buescher visits Rayzor Elementary

NASCAR XFINITY Series championship leader Chris Buescher had some practice hoisting a major trophy Thursday at E.P. Rayzor Elementary School as the Roush Fenway Racing driver returned to his home state looking to inch closer to clinching the series crown.
 
Buescher, the Prosper native who owns a 27-point lead over defending series champion Chase Elliott heading into Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge, visited the Lantana school in the Denton ISD to present the student body with the Texas Motor Speedway Speeding To Read trophy for leading Turn 1 of the reading competition among 6,500 students from 11 Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex schools.
 
Rayzor, the defending Speeding To Read champions, made a statement in the first of four quarters of the competition with a program-record 100 percent of their 533-student body meeting or exceeding the pre-set reading goals for kindergarten through fifth graders.
 
“It was a really cool deal. It was awesome to see everyone’s reaction, especially when they thought the trophy was being given to a different school,” Buescher said. “It was great to see how excited all the kids were to get it back and to accomplish their goal. All 100 percent did what they set out to do. It is a really impressive feat. It was very cool, very awesome to see all the enthusiasm.”  
 
With the perfect performance, Rayzor also owns the lead in the Backstretch Division that also includes Sendera Ranch (Northwest ISD), J.A. Hargrave (Crowley ISD), Nathan Adams (Dallas ISD), Carroll Peak (Fort Worth ISD) and Riverside Applied Learning Center (Fort Worth ISD). Trophy Club’s Samuel Beck Elementary (Northwest ISD), at 94 percent, was tops in the Frontstretch Division that consists of O.A. Peterson (Northwest), Old Settlers (Lewisville ISD), Northbrook (Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD) and Rockbrook (Lewisville). Also topping the 90th percentile in Turn 1 in addition to the division leaders was Haslet’s Sendera Ranch at 93 percent.
 
The 11 schools combined to read 172,178 books during the Turn 1 scoring period that stretched for a six-week period from Sept. 9 through Oct. 22.
 
The top individual readers were Rayzor first-grader Olivia Temer with 850 books read in the K-2 division and third-grader Jaylen Robinson with 114 chapter books read for J.A. Hargrove Elementary from the Crowley ISD. Rayzor had the top K-2 classroom with Melanie Peterson’s kindergarten class averaging 425 books per student while Hargrave had the top 3-5 classroom with Lori Lucas’ third-grade class averaging 71 chapter books per student.
 
Score-A-Goal in the Classroom, a Speeding To Read partner, is donating 240 new books to the Turn 1 leaders, with the school libraries at Rayzor and Samuel Beck, individual division leaders and students of the classroom division leaders all being rewarded in a season-long program that will provide more than 1,100 books to the schools and students involved.
 
Score-A-Goal in the Classroom is among the 11 Texas Motor Speedway Speeding To Read partners that consist of NASCAR, Verizon IndyCar Series, Lionel Racing, aai Trophies & Awards, Domino’s, Woolley’s Frozen Custard, Kid’s Beach Club, Speedway Children’s Charities – TMS Chapter, The Speedway Club and SMI Properties.
 
Buescher hits the track Friday for a XFINITY Series practice session (1-3:25 p.m. CT) in preparation for Saturday’s same-day qualifying and O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge race. The Service King Qualifying Days begin at 11:15 a.m. Saturday for pole qualifying and followed by the O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge at 2:30 p.m. (TV: NBC, Radio: KRLD-FM 105.3 The Fan/PRN/SiriusXM).
 
“I love coming back to Texas, my home track,” Buescher said. “I get to come home and see a lot of friends and family that you don’t get to see most of the year. I’m looking forward to having a good race. Winning at my home track would be the ideal scenario.”
