Just days after the Goody’s® Headache Relief Shot® 500, Martinsville Speedway is already looking ahead to 2016.
After a race which saw Jeff Gordon in victory lane, 18 caution flags and 21 lead changes, Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell knows it’s going to be tough to top, but he and his staff are up for the challenge.
“I’ve been here a long time, and I’ve been to tracks all across the country. That race was one of the best I’ve ever seen, anywhere,” he said. “It had it all – drama, excitement and a very special victory lane. I guess we really lived up to being called the ‘Half-Mile of Mayhem.’”
Next up for the only remaining original NASCAR track is the STP 500 weekend, scheduled for April 1-3, 2016.
“Even though the checkered flag just waved, we’re already looking ahead,” Campbell said. “It’s five months away and we’re already excited for it. The planning has certainly begun.”
The race will be the first stop back on the east coast after NASCAR’s west coast swing. It also marks the first short-track stop on the schedule.
“Fans love the excitement that short-track racing provides and it seems like Martinsville always delivers,” he said. “People started buying their tickets for the spring before the green flag dropped last weekend.”
The STP 500 race weekend will begin with Virginia Lottery Pole Day on Friday, April 1 and will continue with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race on April 2.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will be in action on Sunday, April 3.
