Pairing for the first time, Cole Whitt and CBC Framing, Inc. went into Road America with optimism and excitement. The 22-year-old California native made his second start at the four mile, 14-turn meandering course in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Whitt raced to as high as sixth before bringing the CBC Framing Camry home in the eighth position in Saturday’s Johnsonville Sausage 200.
Starting from the 17th position, Whitt “rubbed and bumped” the No. 44 CBC Framing Toyota Camry into the top-10 by lap 20. “The car was really good early on, I could get into the corners really well and had great acceleration into the straights,” said Whitt.
Whitt was in the sixth position when the caution flag flew on lap 31. Crew Chief Randy Cox decided to bring the CBC Framing Camry to pit road for service. Taking four tires and fuel, Whitt was ready to head back to the track when he became blocked in by the No. 6 of Trevor Bayne. Whitt finally scurried back to the track after losing several positions from the incident and would restart 17th.
“We had good pit stops and a car that handled really well all day long. Towards the end we started to lose brakes and knew we couldn’t take more than two green-white-checkers on fuel,” said Whitt. “I’m really proud of our efforts this weekend, finishing in the top-10 gave us a huge confidence boost. I appreciate our sponsors like CBC Framing, who continue to stand behind me, as well as my crew and team owner,” continued Whitt.
Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Road America was the fourth race for Whitt with TriStar Motorsports and also his first top-10 with the team. With the eighth place finish, Whitt topped his career best finish on a road course and helped maintain the 21st position in the NASCAR Nationwide Series Owner Points Standing for the No. 44 team. Whitt will now set his sights on the 1.5-mile tri-oval of Kentucky Speedway.
