Thousands of Local Students Participat​e, Thousands of Dollars Rewarded to Schools, “Lefty’s Reading Challenge” Another Big Success

More than 115,000 students participated, reading nearly 700,000 books as Auto Club Speedway continued its commitment to education by encouraging area students to take part in Lefty’s Reading Challenge January 14 – February 8.

Held in more than 180 schools in San Bernardino, Riverside and Los Angeles counties, the challenge, named after Auto Club Speedway mascot Lefty, is part of Auto Club Speedway’s heralded youth initiative.

$27,000 will be distributed to the libraries of the winning schools. Students at winning schools will also receive a school-wide pizza party and all teachers and support staff of the winning schools will receive two complimentary tickets to the Auto Club 400 NSCS race on March 24.

The check presentation for the winning schools will take place on Saturday, March 23 during the Royal Purple 300 Pre-Race Ceremonies.

The ten winning schools include:

San Bernardino County: Arroyo Verde Elementary School (Redlands), Etiwanda Colony Elementary School (Rancho Cucamonga), Shadow Hills Elementary School (Fontana), Ted Porter Elementary School (Fontana), and Terra Vista Elementary School (Rancho Cucamonga).

Riverside County: Avalon Elementary School (Perris), Ramona Elementary School (Moreno Valley) and St. Catherine of Alexandria (Riverside).

Los Angeles County: J. Marion Roynon Elementary School (La Verne) and Oakmont Elementary School (Claremont).

All students completing Lefty’s Reading Challenge received:

  • · A certificate of completion
  • · One (1) complimentary ticket for a parent or guardian to the Royal Purple 300 NNS race
  • · One (1) complimentary membership to Lefty’s Kids Club that got kids 12 and under free to NASCAR Qualifying Day and the Royal Purple 300
  • · All teachers that had 100% participation in their classroom received two complimentary tickets to the Auto Club 400 NSCS race

With the support of Bento Box Interactive, all students that completed their reading challenge also received the recently released, digitally enhanced Sweet Pickles E-book, the “Very Worried Walrus”.
