Like virtually every other driver who has climbed into a race car, Mike Wallace has a ton of respect for Indianapolis Motor Speedway and its traditions.
The most famous speedway in the world – in fact, the first facility to be labeled a “speedway” – has been in operation since 1909. It hosted the Sprint Cup Series for the first time in 1994 and welcomed the Nationwide Series for the first time last year.
“It’s a fun track to go to just because of the history,” said Wallace, who’ll be driving the JD Motorsports with Gary Keller Chevrolet in Saturday’s Indiana 250. “It’s the hallowed grounds. I was fortunate enough to drive for Junie Donlavey in the first Cup race there.”
Wallace was running 10th in last year’s inaugural Nationwide race when a pit mishap by another team spoiled his day. He finished 20th, on the lead lap, as Sprint Cup regular Brad Keselowski won the race.
“It means a lot for the series to go to the Brickyard,” Wallace said. “It makes you mainstream, makes you big time. And, it’s a different style of race track. The straightaways are so long. You can see only where you’re racing. You can’t see around the corners until you get there.”
Wallace said the 01 team will have one of its best cars and a top-flight engine for the Indy event.
