Speedway Children’s Charities Gala to Honor Executive Director Maj. Gen. Thomas M. Sadler

On Friday, May 25, retired U.S. Air Force Major General Thomas M. Sadler, executive director of Speedway Children’s Charities (SCC), will be honored at the 32nd annual NRA Foundation Speedway Children’s Charities Gala.

Sadler is being recognized for his dedication to Speedway Children’s Charities’ mission of helping children in educational, financial, social and medical need.

“We are very proud to honor General Sadler this year at the Gala,” said Marcus Smith, vice chairman of Speedway Children’s Charities. “It is amazing to see how Speedway Children’s Charities has grown and developed over the last 22 years under his guidance.”

Since Sadler’s appointment to executive director in 1990, SCC has expanded from one chapter to eight; each located at the eight Speedway Motorsports, Inc. tracks. With his guidance, SCC has become one of the most recognized non-profit organizations in the motorsports industry.

“It’s such an honor to me to be honored. It’s just something that if I think about it too much, I’ll get tears in my eyes,” said Sadler. “Here I am as old as I am. I’m 86 years old and I was in three wars. I can never thank everyone who is involved with Speedway Children’s Charities and Charlotte Motor Speedway enough.

“When I first started back in 1990, it did not take long for me to realize how many children in need there are in our great country. And I soon learned that when you look at a child in need, you are looking into the face of God.”

This year, the 32nd annual NRA Foundation Speedway Children’s Charities Gala will be held for the second consecutive year at The Ritz Carlton in uptown Charlotte. The Gala is one of the biggest fundraising events in the Charlotte area and the event has raised millions of dollars to improve the quality of life for children in the region since its inception.

Mike Joy, principal race announcer for NASCAR on FOX, will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the program. Smith, who is also president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway, and Robert D. Raiford from The Big Show with John Boy and Billy, will be among the speakers at the Gala.

Proceeds from the evening will benefit the grant program of the Charlotte Chapter of SCC and will be awarded to local non-profit organizations that help children in need.

Gala festivities begin at 7 p.m. with a cocktail reception, followed by dinner at 8 p.m. Krystal Keith, Show Dog Universal Music recording artist, will be the musical guest for the evening. The reception will include a silent auction featuring more than 70 items, including a guitar signed by country music star Blake Shelton, vacation packages, jewelry, driving experience packages and autographed helmets and driver memorabilia.
