Hildebrand wins rain shortened Modified show; Casagrande holds on after green checkered finish; Spencer sweeps enduros

After not racing for a month at Evergreen, we decided to roll the dice and get some cars on the track. With threatening skies lurking all day long, Evergreen Raceway was able to finally get the Butler Valley rumbling with the sounds of hard work and competitive racing. At the end of the night Jerry Hildebrand would win the rain shortened 14 lap Evergreen Modified main after numerous challenges from Zane Zeiner. Rain would leave the track not in an optimal position for the continuation of this race and left Evergreen no other alternative other than to call the race. Hildebrand led the field to the green flag and led lap number 1 over Zane Zeiner, Rusty Smith, Nick Baer, and Tommy Wanick. While battling for the lead on lap number 6, Zeiner would peek his nose inside and make contact with Hildebrand but both drivers were able to maintain control of their cars and continue. As racing action continued lap number 10, Zeiner would make a move going into turn 1 and more contact ensued with Hildebrand. Zeiner would slow in turn 1 bringing out the 1st caution with a broken right front suspension from heavy contact relegating him to a 13th place finish. Hildebrand would lead the field back to the green on lap number 10. Just 3 laps later, rookie driver Joe DeAngelo would get sideways off turn 4 and would fight the wheel the entire front stretch before before spinning into oncoming traffic collecting Damon Frutchey ending both their days. While track crews began to clean up the accident the skies opened and with no signs of stopping track officials had no choice but to call the race official giving Hildebrand the win over Smith, Baer, Wanick and Mike Pollack.

Tom Casagrande once again proved why he has been the top dog in the Morans Funeral Home Factory Stock division for the last number of years. If it wouldn’t have been for an opening day disqualification, Casagrande would be 2 for 2. Frank Katona would start from the pole, but it would be short lived as Steph Moyer would lead the opening circuit. Casagrande and point leader Joey Helberg would fall in line right behind her. Casagrande would take the lead on lap number 4. The race would stay green for the first 23 laps of action. Mark Tyson would bring out the first caution in his Engines by Hawk number 22 for a spin in turn 4. This would set up a green, white, checkered ending to the race but after taking the white flag Frank Katona and Scott Sipe would tangle in turn one setting up a thrilling green checkered finish. Casagrande would edge out Helberg and Moyer by inches at the line.

We have all seen Harry O’Neill dominate the Sponenberg Exhaust enduro division but this time it was done by Mark Spencer who would sweep the small car and big car enduros at Evergreen Raceway. Spencer would grab the lead and never look back after a lapped car hooked O’Neill in the right rear sending him to the fence on lap 26. Spencer would put the car on cruise control from there locking up the victory.

Evergreen Raceway will now switch to their summer schedule coming this Friday night with racing getting underway at 8pm.
