VIRginia International Raceway Gears Up for Season’s Thrilling New Race, the Pirelli World Challenge April 28-30

VIRginia International Raceway is hosting the Pirelli World Challenge April 28-30 for a family-friendly weekend of high-end sports car racing on one of the top six road courses in North America. Making its debut at the track this season, the series features thrilling multi-class racing with top drivers competing with the hottest production-based race cars, such as Porsches, Bentleys, McLarens, Ferraris, Nissan GT-Rs, Cadillacs, Acuras and more.

The Pirelli World Challenge features seven separate classes of competition and is North America’s top GT production car-based championship. Its first GT SprintX race of 2017 will take place on VIR’s historic full course, which is 3.27 miles with 17 turns and 130 feet of elevation changes that includes the “climbing esses,” a section of the course considered by many drivers as one of the most challenging and intimidating in North America. This is also the first event of the year where all classes will be competing together, with more than 100 cars expected to race. The two SprintX races will last 60 minutes and feature mandatory driver and tire changes, with the first race taking place Saturday, April 29 and the second Sunday, April 30

“We are honored to host Pirelli World Challenge for the first time since 2010 at VIR, it’s an incredible race and we can’t wait to welcome the talented drivers and new race fans to the track,” said Connie Nyholm, VIR owner and CEO. “It’s so exciting to continue expanding our spectator event schedule and we’re confident VIR fans won’t be disappointed with the high-speed action this series brings. We look forward to creating exciting new memories with everyone at the track this April!”

Beyond the action on the pavement, race weekend festivities offer guests the chance to take advantage of VIR’s many onsite amenities, such as karting, dining at the Oak Tree Tavern, spa treatments at the Oak Tree Spa and more. The three-day event will also include testing, qualifying, car corrals, manufacturer displays, driver autograph sessions, a Coke refresh zone, bounce houses and more. Guests can come for a single day, multiple days throughout the weekend or even camp onsite on the expansive countryside property located at the border of Virginia and North Carolina.
