Setzer, McCumbee And Rouse Earn Victory At Dillon Motor Speedway

The competition at Dillon Motor Speedway this season is fierce – in four late model features there have been four different winners. Justin Hicks, of Laurinburg, N.C., captured his first win of the year Saturday night at the .4-mile speedway, leading wire-to-wire after capturing the pole position by a scant .01.

When the green flew, Hicks jumped out to a lead over a 15-car field that included track champions from several other area speedways. Alex Fleming, a Raleigh, N.C. racer making his first appearance at Dillon in several seasons, gave chase. Though the two cars were virtually equal, Hicks had the track position advantage and would cruise to the victory in the caution-free event.

Dillon favorite Archie Adams Jr. of McColl captured his best finish of the season with a hard-fought third place. The battle for the final spots in the top five were heated. After battling side-by-side for several laps, Randy Benson held off Averitt Lucas, A.J. Walsh and Bobby Gower.

Michael Williamson continued his winning ways in the charger class, but Dillon native Chad Webster stole the show. After sitting out more than a season of racing due to back surgery, Webster made his return and almost captured a fairytale victory. Webster and Williamson battled door-to-door for several laps before Williamson’s blue bullet gained the advantage. Webster went on to finish second, with Ricky Locklear Jr. capturing third place driving his backup car – a street stock camaro. Matt Rogers and Kevin Ellis rounded out the top five.

Lexington, N.C.’s Gary Ledbetter claimed his second victory of the season in the street stock feature, which saw every competitor receive a free set of tires compliments of the race track. Ledbetter held off attacks from multiple racers including Bobby Tumbleston III., Ricky Locklair and Ricky Locklair Jr. in the thrilling race. Due to several caution flags, including a hard crash by McColl’s Justin Altman, several drivers were forced to race through the 11-car field. No one passed more cars than Locklear Jr., who ended up second and appeared to be gaining on the leader when the checkers flew. Behind Locklair were Tumbleston, Wayne Locklair and Kevin Ellis.

Michael Tucker of Thomasville, N.C. won the pro four cylinder race over a strong field of 14 cars. Tucker and Emory Herring swapped the lead back and forth several times during the 25-lap race. Bobby Tumbleston finished third, D.J. Dean fourth and Randy Hewitt fifth.

The mini-cup feature was won by Bill Willis in his first trip to the speedway in several seasons. He held off a late-race charge from Trey Shuler. Karen Melton, Steve Chauncey and Sarah Beerbower completed the top five. Chauncey won the night’s earlier dash-for-cash race.

The most exciting race of the night was the new Banger Class, which saw the leaders race side-by-side for nearly the entire 15 laps. Louie Lanctot finished first over Matt Carter and Hunter Britt.
