Homestead Miami Speedway recognizes second grade class at Dr. Edward L. Whigham Elementary School

Through Homestead-Miami Speedway’s “Racing to Read” program, second-grade students across Miami-Dade County are now on the fast track to become avid readers.

On Tuesday, January 26, Ms. Horne’s second-grade class from Dr. Edward L. Whigham Elementary School in Cutler Bay was recognized for reading the most books among the 84 participating second-grade classes with a pizza party.  The pizzas were delivered to the school in the official Homestead-Miami Speedway pace car.

“Racing to Read’ is Homestead-Miami Speedway’s annual reading program for Miami-Dade second-grade students. Miami-Dade County and Homestead-Miami Speedway challenged the students to read 10 books or more in a five-week window between September 21 and October 23, 2015. Overall, there were 26,573 books read from students at 21 different Miami-Dade County schools.

All of the students who read more than 10 books received tickets to the 2015 Ford EcoBoost 300 NASCAR XFINITY Series race on November 21, where they got to witness NASCAR driver Chris Buescher win his first XFINITY Series championship title.  As a result of Ms. Horne’s class reading the most books, Dr. Edward L. Whigham Elementary also will receive $1,000 from Homestead-Miami Speedway’s “Driving for a Cause” charitable arm to purchase new books and supplies.

This was the fourth consecutive year in which Homestead-Miami Speedway has sponsored the program. For more information, please contact Stephanie Gonzalez-Solis, Growth Segments Marketing Manager at Homestead-Miami Speedway, at sgonzalez@homesteadmiamispeedway.com.
