Robert Richardson, Jr., a Texas native, will be piloting the #23 Tia Rosa Chevrolet with a new paint scheme, and crew chief, Greg Conner, will be making the calls from the pit box. Richardson, Jr says:
“Welcome to “MY HOUSE!”, Texas Motor Speedway. Texas was the place where my racing career got started back in 2002 racing legends cars out here. I also ran super late models, Camping world trucks, and now the Nascar Nationwide series. Texas has always been a homecoming event for our family-owned team and myself. We put in a lot of effort into our cars on a weekly basis, but Texas always seems to be a track that we really emphasize on extra detail to our setups. Crew Chief Greg Connor has really turned our program around this year and our crew has great chemistry and we all work as a team which in the end leads to a successful race team. Texas is your typical “cookie-cutter” mile and a half race track. Much like Atlanta, and Charlotte, Texas carries high speeds and multiple grooves to race in. But It also has unique characteristics to the track that none of the others have. There are a series of bumps in the middle of turns 1 &2. “The tunnel bump” which is where the tunnel leading to the infield is. The higher up the track you run, the rougher it gets. So you try to get your car handling well on the bottom in turns 1 & 2. Turns 3 & 4 is a fairly easier corner to get through. You can run the top, middle, or bottom groove on this end of the race track fairly easily. Coming off of turn 4 you have the “dog leg” on the front stretch. The objective is to keep the steering wheel as straight as possible going through there to try not to scrub off speed to make a clean lap. R3 Motorsports is also entered in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race with driver, Scott Riggs. Riggs is looking forward to returning to Texas Motor Speedway, piloting the red #23 North Texas Pipe Chevrolet.
Riggs comments, “Texas is a fast, tough track. The banking doesn’t start until you are already into the corner. Then the banking falls away before you get out of the corner. It’s hard to get your car comfortable entering the corners and still rotate through the turns. The track also has a lot of character with the bumps in the center of turns one and two. It’s a challenging track but I look forward to going!”
