Ross Chastain was rushing toward a top-12 finish in Friday night’s Food City 300 Xfinity Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway when a late-race accident knocked him out of the race.
Chastain made contact with Regan Smith as they raced for position on lap 282. Chastain slammed into the wall and heavily damaged the JD Motorsports with Gary Keller No. 4 Chevrolet, forcing him to retire for the evening. Instead of a finish in the top 12, he was listed at 32nd.
“We were racing for the position, and it was a misjudgment,” Chastain said. “I thought we were clear and I came up on him and he turned me into the wall. The car was destroyed.”
The late-race turn of events slowed Chastain’s charge toward a spot in the post-season Xfinity Chase playoffs. He remained in 13th position – one spot out of the Chase grid – but now trails 12th place by 15 points.
“The guys are at the shop today (Saturday) getting cars ready,” Chastain said. “We’ll keep going after it over these next few races.”
