Strong Run for Jesse Love and the No. 2 Whelen Chevrolet Team at Iowa Speedway Before On-Track Issues

“Our No. 2 Whelen Chevrolet was fast today at Iowa Speedway. We started off lacking rear grip. With an early caution, Danny Stockman (crew chief) was able to make solid adjustments which allowed us to pick up stage points. It also set us up for a late race push, since we still had a set of stickers for the end. A lap or two before the tire blew, I started to notice a vibration. On that last restart, the No. 00 washed up into me, and I tried to fill the gap because track position is so important. I made a little contact with him, and maybe that caused a slow leak before it finally started bleeding so bad that we blew the tire. I hate it for my Richard Childress Racing team. We had a top-five car. We will return to work and prepare for New Hampshire Motor Speedway next weekend.”

“Man, I really thought our Bennett Transportation & Logistics Chevrolet was going to have a solid shot at the win or at least a top-five finish with a good points day. The track was super free for us, and we had to tighten up a lot throughout the race. We finally got to the other side of it, where I was a little on the tight side. As soon as I got snug, it was the best we were all day. We fought some issues today with blisters on our right front tires, but thought we had it fixed before that last pit stop. That run was by far my best run of the race, as I was able to drive all the way up to sixth and be in contention for the win. I thought we were better than the No. 20, especially on the short run. If I could have got the lead on the restart and hold him off for a few laps, we could have had a shot for the win. When I drove down into Turn 1 the lap before hitting the wall, I felt an issue and lost a lot of ground to the No. 20. When I drove down into Turns 3 and 4, it felt weird again, but it was also the same feeling as Turn 1. When I got back around the next lap, I lifted early, because I felt like I had an issue. When I started to lift and touch the brake pedal, the tire blew. At that point, you’re on the splitter and you can’t turn the steering wheel to save it. Bummer ending, but we will shift our focus to next week.”
