With Nine Races Left, Elliott’s Chase is on at Richmond

When you mathematically dissect what remains for NAPA AUTO PARTS driver Chase Elliott in the final nine NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS) races of 2015, the numbers are telling. Now in third place in the championship standings, Elliott sits 35 points out of first place. So for Elliott and the No. 9 team, the math is simple. Elliott must best points leader Chris Buescher by an average of 3.8 positions in each of the final nine races to secure his second NXS championship in as many years.

The team will have its first opportunity at Richmond International Raceway, which couldn’t come at a better time for the 19-year-old. Statistically, the .75-mile oval is one of Elliott’s most successful tracks, and one where he holds an average finish of 3.0 – his NXS career best. In three career starts at the facility, Elliott also boasts an average start of 4.7 and has never failed to finish outside the top five.

Richmond stands with Dover International Speedway and Phoenix International Raceway as one of three tracks remaining on the schedule less than a mile in length. It’s a comparably small number with the six 1.5-mile surfaces the NXS has yet to race on in 2015. But if the No. 9 NAPA KNOW HOW team is to have any chance at a repeat championship, they’ll need to find success at all of these facilities.
