The No. 22 Discount Tire FORD Mustang of Joey Logano powered by Roush Yates Engines swept the Axalta Faster Tougher Brighter 200 weekend at Phoenix International Raceway with the Xfinity Series. Logano lead an astonishing 176 of 200 laps in route to the win along with winning the Coors Light Pole.
“We have been so close here the last four races or so!” said Logano in victory lane, “Yeah, it felt good. When I came across the line I thought, finally! What a day with the pole and the victory.”
The win gave Logano his first Xfinity Series victory since September 28, 2013 at Dover International Speedway for his Team Penske, FORD. It was the first win for Scottsdale, AZ based company, Discount Tire with Logano behind the wheel and his 22nd career Xfinity Series win.
“It is so great to get Discount Tire in victory lane in their home area,” said Logano, “Greg Erwin and all these guys did a great job for me today. It was awesome. Great car.”
During qualifying, Logano set a new track record with a lap of 26.627 seconds at a speed of 135.201 mph. The previous track record was 134.298 set back in 2011. This was his 28th career Xfinity Series pole and third pole in nine races at Phoenix.
“This has been a new year certainly for the 22 program at Penske,” said Greg Erwin, Crew Chief for the No. 22, “I think really the most gratifying thing I will take away from today is that we have been in contention to win every race this year.”
Logano has run in two Xfinity Series races this year and sat on the pole for both. He finished second at Atlanta on February 28th.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and Xfinity Series travel to Southern California for a doubleheader weekend at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA.
