McClure Finishes 17th in Season-Opener at DIS with JGL Racing

Eric McClure had a new look coming into Saturday’s NASCAR XFINITY Series season-opener at Daytona Int’l Speedway. After spending the previous four seasons at TriStar Motorsports, McClure joined JGL Racing in the off-season for a full XFINITY series campaign in 2015. Despite the various obstacles the team faced during their first race together, McClure avoided the may lay of accidents and brought the No. 24 Reynolds Wrap® Camry home in the 17th position. With this finish, the Virginia driver sits 11th in the 2015 driver standings while the team sits 17th in the owner standings.

When the race began, McClure fell to the tail of the big pack. After a few laps, the car began to lose contact with the large draft and McClure informed the team that the car wouldn’t maintain pace. The driver reported that when cars were to the outside of the No. 24 Camry, the air disturbance tried to “literally stop the car”.

Shortly after making a routine green flag pit stop on lap 40 for right-side tires and fuel, McClure informed his crew chief that something was also amiss in the engine. As a result, McClure spent the remaining 80 laps “nursing” the car around the 2.5-mile superspeedway. Although McClure was never able to fully utilize the draft and had to combat several issues along the way, he was still able to bring the No. 24 Reynolds Wrap® Camry home in one piece and finish the event with a top-20 finish.

Eric McClure Quotes:

“I’m still pondering the events of the race, trying to make sense of it and realizing I can’t. The race didn’t go how any of us had hoped or expected. I’m thankful and stunned that we had a good finish after fighting what we did. It was clear almost immediately something wasn’t right with the race. Despite the frustration, we finished and that’s important; it’s a great lesson for us all…to finish it out even when things are tough.”
