A Great American Day at the Races with Charlie’s Soap and Derrike Cope

Derrike Cope will arrive at Daytona International Speedway in February – the site of his first NASCAR Cup victory – ready for intense drafting and announcing the return of Charlie’s Soap as primary sponsor for Derrike Cope Racing at the Feb. 21 Xfinity Series race.

Cope spent the 2014 season on the Nationwide NASCAR circuit, now backed by Comcast’s Xfinity division. This year’s Daytona 500 marks the 25th anniversary of the day he passed Dale Earnhardt on the last lap after Earnhardt ran over debris in Turn 3. Cope had been on Earnhardt’s tail all day and the Purolator Chevrolet had led laps in the middle and at the end of the race among 13 different drivers. Much later Earnhardt was heard to graciously say to Cope regarding the missed victory, “It’s the Daytona 500 not the Daytona 499.” This race is listed as one of the biggest upsets and best finishes in NASCAR history.

Cope went on to win at Dover a few months later after almost being a lap down to solidify the fact that he was a force to be reckoned with.

“What’s challenging about superspeedway races is showing patience,” Cope said. “With a track like Daytona you can take advantage of the high-speed drafting and run with bigger teams. Avoiding the wrecks is a key to a good finish here. To get too aggressive and damage the car would severely impair a small team like us going into the season, so 25 years later I will draw on my superspeedway experience for a good finish here for our fans and friends at Charlie’s Soap.”

“This is great news for Derrike and our company,” said Taylor Sutherland, Charlie’s Soap president. “Daytona last year was the first time Charlie’s Soap sponsored a race car. On and off the track, their program was a success. Charlie’s Soap customers and employees have all rallied behind this program.”

“We are excited that Charlie’s Soap wants to continue racing with us,” Cope said. “It’s truly gratifying when new sponsors come into the sport and see it make a difference. We are going to be doing Facebook and Twitter contests for opportunities to win 1990 Daytona memorabilia as well as special offers on Charlie’s Soap. I hope our fans will take advantage of these and try this amazing product.”
