Kenny Wallace Winds up Seventh after Wild Ride At Daytona

It was a wet and wild weekend at Daytona International Speedway as RAB Racing with Brack Maggard and driver Kenny Wallace faced a rainy day prior to witnessing a wild finish Friday night in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) Subway Jalapeno 250. Wallace, piloting the No. 09 G-OIL Toyota Camry, earned his sixth top-10 of 2011 by finishing seventh after making a last lap “pass through the grass” to avoid a multi-car pile-up that erupted coming to the checkered flag.

Cloudy skies and soggy conditions in Daytona Beach left Wallace and the RAB Racing team to wait and wonder Thursday when weather conditions forced the cancellation of the day’s first scheduled practice session. By late afternoon, the track was dry and Wallace went out to make his first laps of the weekend in the G-OIL Toyota Camry. After a brief 45 minute practice session, Wallace posted 15th fastest on the speed charts. After taking time around the 2.5-mile tri-oval track Friday afternoon, Wallace picked up the 19th starting position.

Before taking the green flag, Wallace was forced to move to the rear of the field for the start because of unapproved changes after qualifying. When the green flag waved, Wallace worked quickly to improve his position, moving up 17 positions to 25th in the first 10 laps. When the first caution displayed for a spin in turn 3 on lap 27, Wallace had gained five positions, and restarted 20th on lap 30. Wallace made an appearance in the top-10 prior to the midway point in the race where he was scored in 20th after the fourth caution flag flew on lap 50.

With 50 laps remaining, Wallace did his part to pick up spots one-by-one in his G-OIL Camry. With nine laps remaining, Wallace lined up his Toyota-powered “green-machine” ninth for what would be the final restart on lap 91. Battling for position, Wallace was running nose to tail when a multi-car accident broke out, forcing him into the grass where he picked up a few spots before being officially scored seventh. Surviving the “big one” at the end, Wallace earned his third seventh place finish of the season while continuing to hold on to the seventh spot in the NNS driver point standings.
