The NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) made its one and only stop at Kansas Speedway this weekend for the Kansas Lottery 300 on Saturday afternoon. With a brand new chassis out of the Turner Scott Motorsports (TSM) shop, Justin Allgaier hit the track on Friday afternoon for the first practice session of the weekend. Allgaier finished the session seventh on the practice chart after completing 36 laps. After a short break, Allgaier took to the track in his No. 31 BRANDT Chevrolet Camaro for the final practice session. He completed 37 laps and finished 13th in the session. Allgaier went out 30th in the qualifying order on Saturday morning, and posted a lap time of 29.338 seconds. That lap time earned Allgaier the second starting position for the Kansas Lottery 300 on Saturday. After a caution-filled race, Allgaier brought the No. 31 BRANDT Professional Agriculture Chevrolet home in the fifth position for TSM.
Allgaier took the green flag in the second position on Saturday afternoon under cool temperatures and sunny skies in his BRANDT Chevy. Following the first caution for laps four to six, Allgaier took the lead at lap seven and held it until lap 19. When the scheduled competition caution came out at lap 26, Allgaier was in the second position. After reporting his BRANDT Chevy was getting a little bit tighter to crew chief Scott Zipadelli, he was called down pit road for two right-side tires and Sunoco fuel. After having to slow to avoid contact with another car while exiting his pit stall, Allgaier restarted in the sixth position on lap 31. The third caution of the race came out at lap 38, and Allgaier did not come down pit road. He restarted in the sixth position on lap 42 and was in 12th when the fourth caution came out at lap 45. Allgaier radioed in to Zipadelli that he was tight off of the corner and had lost front grip. Zipadelli made the call for Allgaier and the BRANDT Chevy to stay out. He restarted in the 12th position and moved up to 11th when the fifth caution came out at lap 53 for a spin on the backstretch. Zipadelli brought Allgaier down pit road for four Goodyear tires and fuel. The pit stop was just in the nick of time, as the team discovered one of the left-side tires was beginning to come apart. Allgaier restarted in the 23rd position after several competitors stayed out on the track. During a long green-flag run in the race, Allgaier worked his way up to the 16th position. While the competitors who didn’t pit during the last caution began making their pit stops under the green flag, the caution came out at lap 91 and Allgaier was in the fifth position. After relaying to Zipadelli that his car was tight in the center, he came down pit road for four tires, fuel and an air-pressure adjustment. Allgaier restarted in the third position on lap 95.
Allgaier reported that his car was really tight on the set of tires just put on by the BRANDT pit crew. Even with a tight car, Allgaier continued in the third position. After a caution and pit stop at lap 118, and another caution at lap 123, Allgaier was fourth when the ninth caution came out at lap 133. Zipadelli told Allgaier to save fuel. He restarted in the fourth position, and it wasn’t long before the 10th caution came out at lap 146 with Allgaier in the fifth position. Zipadelli called Allgaier down pit road for two left-side tires, fuel and an air-pressure adjustment. After restarting in the fifth position, Allgaier worked his way up to third when the 11th and final caution of the race came out for an accident on the frontstretch. Allgaier restarted in the third position on lap 196, and made his way up to the second position on the next lap. As the race came to an end, Allgaier reported his BRANDT Chevy had become tight. When the checkered flag waved, Allgaier and the No. 31 BRANDT Chevrolet were in the fifth position. With the top-five finish, Allgaier moved into the fifth position in the NNS Driver Point Standings.
“We had a great weekend in the No. 31 BRANDT Chevy,” said Allgaier. “My crew guys and everyone at Turner Scott Motorsports gave me a great car. We had a new chassis this weekend, and I think we gained a lot from that. I wish I could’ve have gotten us better finish, but I will take the top five. We also had a good points day, and I’m looking forward to moving on to Charlotte [Motor Speedway]. It will be nice to be racing just down the road from my house and to spend the week at home. I expect another great weekend in the BRANDT Chevy.”
