Bowman Finishes in 20th Position at Daytona

RAB Racing and the #99 ToyotaCare Camry driven by Alex Bowman came into Daytona International Speedway with some momentum off of their top 10 finish at Kentucky Speedway, and debuted a brand new car in chassis No. 43. The new car proved to have speed as the team qualified in the 12th position, the second fastest Toyota Camry in the field and the leading Sunoco rookie of the year candidate.

The green flag dropped on the Subway Firecracker 250 and Bowman held in the top 15, cautiously drafting with his Toyota teammates, waiting for the end of the race to make a move to the front. With 15 laps to go, Bowman started drafting with the No. 54 of Kyle Busch and made his way into the top 5, but overheating issues forced him to fall back into clean air. After pitting to remove debris from the front grille and fix the overheating problem, the No. 99 restarted in the 29th position with only 8 laps to go. Bowman barely avoided the only multi car incident of the night and brought the No. 99 ToyotaCare Camry home in 20th position.

Alex Bowman: Well we’re definitely disappointed about a 20th place finish, this RAB Racing Toyota Camry was much better than what our finish came out to be. We were positioning ourselves for a solid top 10 finish when a car spun through the grass, and that grass came back and got stuck in my front grille causing the car to overheat. If we hadn’t been forced to pit to get the grass out of the front grille with only 8 laps to go, we could have finished much better. We’ve had some awful luck at superspeedways this season, so I’m happy we brought this car home in one piece, we’ve destroyed two cars this season racing for the win so to bring a car back to the shop that we can work on and improve is a big advantage for all my guys at RAB Racing.

With the 20th place finish Bowman still occupies the 11th position in driver point standings and Robby Benton holds the 15th position in owner point standings. The next race for the No. 99 RAB Racing Toyota Camry and Alex Bowman will be Saturday July 13th with the F.W. Webb 200 at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway, and will be televised live on ESPN.
