The schooling paid off.
Mike Wallace, who re-energized his road-racing skills with a visit earlier this year to veteran driver Ron Fellows’ driving school, cashed in the new experience Saturday by finishing 13th in the Johnsonville Sausage 200 at Road America.
The race is the first of three Nationwide Series events on road courses this season.
Wallace, aboard the JD Motorsports with Gary Keller Chevrolet, started 31st but steadily progressed through the field, reaching 20th near the halfway point of the race.
He scored his second-best finish of the Nationwide season despite being spun out early in the race near the third turn, flat-spotting all four tires. He rallied from the ensuing pit stop and survived a double green-white-checkered finish to roll home with one of his best finishes of the year.
“All in all, it was a decent finish,” said Wallace, who added that the team had planned its strategy on the race finishing with three green-white-checkereds.
Wallace remained in the 16th position in Nationwide points.
