Superintendent Terri Cox-Cruey and Kentucky Speedway General Manager Mark Simendinger ceremoniously planted one of 50 NASCAR “Green Clean Air” Program trees donated to the Kenton Co. School District Edgewood Campus at Turkey Foot Middle School at 3230 Turkeyfoot Rd., in Edgewood, Ky.
NASCAR’s “Green Clean Air” tree planting program was implemented to capture carbon produced by on-track activity and partners with venues to donate 10 trees for every green flag waved during NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events. Kentucky Speedway’s June 30 Quaker State 400 witnessed five green flags before Penske Racing’s Brad Keselowski took the checkered flag.
Kentucky Speedway designated the Edgewood Campus, made up of Turkey Foot Middle School, James A. Caywood Elementary School and the Academy of Sustainable Energy Technology Engineering, as the beneficiary of the annual tree donation.
“Students at Turkey Foot are learning about the importance of planting trees as a way to offset the production of carbon. Students also evaluated the landscaping on the school grounds from an environmental perspective and learned how changes in the landscaping could offset carbon while also enhancing the energy efficiency of the school,” Cox-Cruey explained.
The NASCAR “Green Clean Air” was founded in 2007 to inform NASCAR fans while minimizing environmental effects of the sport through partnerships with race teams, official partners and tracks.
“I am excited to welcome the Kentucky Speedway and NASCAR ‘Green Clean Air’ Program to the Kenton County School District. Energy management is a critical component of the Kenton County School District’s mission to prepare students to be productive members of our community,” Cox-Cruey added.
She reports the district has avoided more than $4,000,000 in energy costs since its energy management program began in 2007. Savings were achieved through the studentE=WISE2 program, an Energy Savings Performance Contract, andthree high-performance energy buildings: Twenhofel Middle School, Caywood Elementary and Turkey Foot Middle School, which is powered by the largest electric producing solar array installed in Kentucky and puts electricity back on the grid.
Kentucky Speedway opens its 14th season with a NASCAR tripleheader weekend that features the Quaker State 400 on June 29. Racing begins on June 27 with the Camping World Truck Series UNOH 225 and continues with the June 28 Nationwide Series Feed The Children 300.
