Tanner Gray of Artesia, New Mexico won his first career NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race Saturday night in the first 100-lap race of the whosyourdriver.org NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Twin 100s at South Boston Speedway.
The second 100-lap race of the scheduled twin 100-lap race event was stopped at 20 laps by a heavy thunderstorm that forced track and NASCAR officials to have to schedule the completion of the race on Sunday afternoon.
Action at South Boston Speedway will resume at 3 p.m. Sunday with the 15-lap Budweiser Hornets Division race, which was also rained out, scheduled to be run first. The second 100-lap NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race will be resumed after the Hornets Division race, with the race being resumed on lap 20.
Sunday’s schedule at South Boston Speedway has registration and pit gates opening at 1:30 p.m. A driver’s meeting for the Budweiser Hornets Division drivers will be held at 2:15 p.m.
Grandstand gates will open at 2:30 p.m. and racing will start at 3 p.m.
Gray, the 2018 NHRA Pro Stock drag racing champion, led over half the race, but had to survive a two-lap shootout to the finish with Sam Mayer and Chase Cabre after a caution flag flew on lap 97 for a mishap.
Gray and Mayer raced side-by-side after the final restart with Gray moving Mayer to gain the lead. Cabre, trying to make a run on Mayer on the last lap, made contact with Mayer’s car in the second turn and spun, opening the door for Gray to take the win.
Gray edged Mayer of Franklin, Wisconsin by .320-second to take the win, with rookie Max McLaughlin of Mooresville, North Carolina finishing third. Spencer Davis of Dawsonville, Georgia and Ruben Garcia Jr. of Mexico City, Mexico rounded out the top five finishers in the first race.
Nick Sanchez of Miami, Florida started on the pole for the start of the second race after posting the fastest lap of the first race. He led the first 18 laps after Gray was black-flagged by NASCAR officials for jumping the initial start of the race. Then came the storm that ended the night’s action.
Pickrel Takes Pure Stock Win
Jordan Pickrel of Keeling, Virginia scored his first win in the Budweiser Pure Stock Division Saturday night, scoring a flag-to-flag win in the 30-lap race.
Pickrel sped across the finish line 3.232 seconds ahead of two-time winner Nathan Crews of Long Island, Virginia who started at the rear of the field and raced his way through traffic to get back near the front.
Austin Milam of Keeling, Virginia, Jarrett Milam of Keeling, Virginia and Bruce Mayo of Halifax, Virginia rounded out the top five finishers in the caution-free race.
