Homestead-Miami Speedway is in the midst of crowning champions on the race track during Ford Championship Weekend. Today, the Speedway also announced a few champions in the community as well.
As a way to salute South Floridians for their exceptional service, Homestead-Miami Speedway launched the Community Champion Award earlier this year. The award is being bestowed upon a nominee from each of three categories – teacher, volunteer and student. The winners of the award are as follows:
· Teacher: Andrea Harrell, Homestead Middle School
· Student: Kayla Montizaan, Miami Arts Charter Homestead
· Volunteer: Vanessa Davalos
In addition to honoring the Community Champion Award winners, the Speedway will also recognize former athletic director Chris Hixon, one of the victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy. Hixon was a navy veteran and lifelong NASCAR fan who was deeply dedicated to the many students he taught, and lost his life protecting them. He will be represented Sunday by his wife, Debra, and son, Corey.
“All of these people have served our community in extraordinary ways, and deserve this very prestigious honor,” said Homestead-Miami Speedway President Matthew Becherer. “We are proud to be able to support those who make our community a special place.”
