Brett Moffitt Wins Ford EcoBoost, 200, Crowned 2018 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Champion

In his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Brett Moffitt made a splash by winning the Ford EcoBoost 200 championship race on Friday night.

The 26-year old from Grimes, Iowa led 50 of the race’s 134 laps en route to reaching Victory Lane and capturing the 2018 NCWTS championship. The victory was Moffitt’s sixth of the season to go along with 13 top-5s and top-10s. His six wins are the most by a truck series champion since 2009, when Ron Hornaday Jr. also won six races. The driver of the No. 16 truck for Hattori Racing capped off his championship season with a bang, winning the final two races of the season, at ISM Raceway and Homestead-Miami Speedway.

“It’s unreal,” said Moffitt of winning the championship. “We all know the story by now where we didn’t know if we were going to race the full year. I didn’t know if I was going to have the opportunity to compete for a championship even after we got our first win. Everyone pulled together hard here. We’ve had many partners all year long that came in at clutch moments and got us to the race track when we needed to.”

Moffitt beat out the remaining Championship 4 contenders Noah Gragson (3rd), Justin Haley (8th) and Johnny Sauter (12th) to take home his first career victory at the 1.5-mile championship track. Gragson was the only other championship contender to lead laps in the race, capturing 34 laps before surrendering the lead to eventual champion, Moffitt.

“That was the longest 20-30 laps of my life,” said Moffitt. “Man, I’m glad we could get to the white flag there without a caution and have clean sailing. I just have to thank AISIN and (team owner Shigeaki) “Shige” (Hattori) and everybody at TRD (Toyota Racing Development) for how hard they worked for us this last month. They’ve given us everything possible to make these things fast and tonight we were able to win the race and win the championship.”

The title makes Moffitt the 17th different driver to win the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship. Moffitt also became the first NCWTS driver to win the Ford EcoBoost 200 at Homestead-Miami Speedway and win the series championship.

Hattori Racing, owned by Shigeaki Hattori, clinched the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series owners title. Hattori is the first Japanese owner to clinch the NCWTS owners championship. All six of the team’s wins came this season by Moffitt.

Myatt Snider of ThorSport Racing was the 2018 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Rookie of the Year.
