Dover International Speedway, Dover Downs Hotel & Casino send supplies for Hurricane Harvey relief

Dover International Speedway and Dover Downs Hotel & Casino received donations from more than 100 individuals and community groups during their recent collection of supplies bound for areas in Texas affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Among the materials collected were baby items, pet supplies, canned goods and cleaning materials.

One mini-bus and one utility van were loaded with supplies on Wednesday and taken to Harbor Transport in Federalsburg, Md., where they will be placed on a tractor trailer bound for the Gulf Coast at the end of the week.

“This is a generous community and the outpouring of support for the people of Texas has been wonderful,” said Dover International Speedway Business Development Representative Karen Ptak, who organized the donations. “The pictures we’re seeing every day from that area are devastating, so it feels good to provide a little help and relief.”

Dover Downs Hotel & Casino, the largest hotel facility in Delaware, donated boxes of gently used items to the cause, including washcloths, hand towels, bath towels, toiletries and bottled water.

As of Wednesday, Sept. 6, Hurricane Harvey has been blamed for more than 60 deaths and displaced more than 30,000 residents in Texas. Recovery costs are expected to exceed $50 billion.
