NASCAR K&N Teams Spend Friday Dialing In Cars For whosyourdriver.org Twin 100s at South Boston Speedway

On an afternoon when 19 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East teams were scrambling to find speed, three drivers with local ties ended the day optimistic about their chances in Saturday’s whosyourdriver.org Twin100s at South Boston Speedway.

No official times were kept during the three-hour session, but Harrison Burton, Peyton Sellers and Matt Bowling were pleased with their efforts. Burton is the son of former NASCAR Cup star Jeff Burton, and has family roots deep in South Boston. Both Sellers and Bowling race at South Boston on a regular basis.

“Things went really well. We rolled off the trailer with decent speed and worked hard all day and eventually had a fast car,” said the 16-year-old Burton, who is the series’ most recent winner with a victory at Bristol Motor Speedway two weeks ago. He also leads the K&N East point standings. “But we have to be a little better tomorrow. We learned a lot today and with the hour of practice tomorrow, we should get better.”

Grandstand gates open at 4:30 Saturday, with the green flag dropping on the first 100-lap K&N race at 7. Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for children ages 7 to 12. Children six and under are admitted free.

Danville’s Peyton Sellers, who holds the South Boston K&N qualifying record from 2008 when he ran the full series, was solid all day. He believes that will bode well for Saturday’s race, his first K&N start in several years.

“I think we are OK. We didn’t wear the car out. I’m confident the car will come in tomorrow with the hour of practice. I think we can dial it in,” said Sellers.

Bowling, the defending NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion and South Boston Speedway champion, will be making his first K&N start. He said he and his team made gains throughout the three-hour practice.

“It took some adjusting for me to get used to the car,” said Bowling. “We’re just trying to get more speed out of the car. We had one decent run, but we’ve got to find a little more speed.”

In addition to the twin K&N East races Saturday, there will be a 20-lap race for South Boston Speedway’s Budweiser Hornets Division and a 25-lap race for the regional touring Southern Ground Pounders.

An autograph session for all drivers will be held trackside from 5:40 p.m. until 6:40 p.m. Pre-race activities start at 6:45 p.m. and the first of twin 100-lap races for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East competitors will get the green flag at 7 p.m.

Also Saturday the 14th Annual Halifax County Heritage and Antique Machinery Festival will be held at the Halifax County Fairgrounds adjacent to the speedway. Anyone presenting a wristband from the Heritage Festival will receive $5 off the cost of admission to the whosyourdriver.org Twin 100s.
