Smokin’ & Jokin’ BBQ Wins Best Overall at Talladega Superspeedway Wild Game Cook-Off

With close to 40 cook teams and over 1000 members and guests in attendance, Smokin’ & Jokin’ BBQ captured the top prize of “Best Overall,” during the 12th annual Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF)’s Wild Game Cook-Off at Talladega Superspeedway this past Saturday.

The winning dish, prepared in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series garage at the storied 2.66-mile Talladega Superspeedway, was their scrumptious Quail Milanaise. The Smokin’ & Jokin’ BBQ cook team included Chad Jones, Khara Jones, Blake Self and Rachel Self.

Cook-Off teams fired up their grills, fryers and smokers and prepared various mouthwatering fish, fowl and game delicacies. As a result of their win, the Smokin’ & Jokin’ BBQ team is invited to the state finals held at Lanark in Millbrook on August 5 to compete for the title of AWF 2017 Wild Game Cook-Off State Champion.

Judges for the event were a “who’s who” of local media personalities and celebrities that included:  Rick Karle (WBRC 6 TV), Charles Daniel, Stu McCann, and Jeff Speegle (ABC 33/40 TV), Jim Dunaway (CBS 42 TV & WJOX 94.5 Radio), Ashley Gann (CBS 42 TV), Lisa Crane and Guy Rawlings (NBC 13 TV), Grady Sapp (WTDR 92.7 Radio), Ryan Brown (WJOX 94.5 Radio), Matt Murphy (Talk 99.5 Radio), Davey Allen (WZZK 104.7), Trent Butler (WAFF 48 TV), Chip Moore (VP & Head of Operations First Bank of Alabama), and Marshall Christie (Director of Metal Arts at Sloss Furnaces).

The People’s Choice Award sponsored by Civilian Marksmanship Program went to Hog Heaven. 1st Place Presentation Award went to Co-Op Cut Ups, while Smokin Hawt/Hooks & Horns took home Best Presentation Runner-Up.

The purpose of AWF Wild Game Cook-Offs is to supply a place for AWF members to interact, for non-members to learn more about AWF, and to provide the opportunity to raise funds to support AWF and its programs and projects. The Cook-Offs also demonstrate that sportsmen/women utilize the wild game and fish they harvest and cook it with care, skill and expertise to produce great table fare.
