One week after being eliminated from the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship, Martin Truex Jr. showed that he will still be a factor in the Goody’s Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway. Truex captured the Virginia Lottery Pole Award for Sunday’s race.
For Truex, it’s his second straight pole and fifth of the season, but first at Martinsville.
“It’s fun to be back at the race track with some positive things happening,” Truex said. “Our first pole here at Martinsville, so it feels good. It’s such an accomplishment. This track is so tough; so difficult. All of the history here, it’s just a place that people want to do well at.”
Joey Logano saw his bid at track history come up just short as he will start second in Sunday’s race. Logano was trying to become the first Sprint Cup Series driver in the track’s storied history to win four straight poles.
“So close to getting that fourth straight pole, that would have been really cool to say you did that,” Logano said. “We’re not in the business of winning poles, we’re in the business of winning races. A lot of times that takes winning the pole, but in general we want to win the races.”
Eight-time Martinsville Winner and Chase contender Jimmie Johnson will start third, followed by A.J. Allmendinger and Chase Elliott.
Tony Stewart will start sixth in his final Martinsville start, followed by a trio of Joe Gibbs Racing drivers. Carl Edwards will start seventh, followed by Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch. All three drivers are in the Chase.
Jeff Gordon, the defending race winner will start 10th.
The Goody’s Fast Relief 500 race weekend is this weekend.
The action continues on Saturday with the Texas Roadhouse 200 presented by Alpha Energy Solutions NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Race.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is in action Sunday with the Goody’s Fast Relief 500.
Adult ticket prices for the Goody’s Fast Relief 500 start at $55. Seats in the Bill France Tower are only $60.
Last year, Jeff Gordon took home his ninth grandfather clock trophy and was the first driver to clinch a spot in the Championship Round of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
The Goody’s Fast Relief 500 is the first race in the Round of 8 of the Chase.
