When putting together plans for its $1 million capital improvement project, South Boston Speedway officials didn’t have to look far to get the job done.
Almost all of the contractors and vendors used for the ongoing projects are from South Boston and the surrounding area.
“It’s was very important to us to use as many local contractors and subcontractors as possible,” said Nick Igdalsky, Senior Vice President of South Boston Speedway and Chief Operating Officer of Pocono Raceway, which owns South Boston Speedway.
“For almost 60 years this community has supported us and we always do everything we can do to return that support.”
Igdalsky said vendors from outside the area have been used only for specialized jobs that had no local source.
Work is underway on the most substantial portion of the three-year project, the repaving of the .4-mile oval. It is the first time the track has been repaved since 1993.
Mike Day Paving is the lead contractor on the paving project. Two inches of the old asphalt was removed in the “milling” process last week. The ground-up asphalt was repurposed to improve the parking area and roads into the pits.
In addition to Mike Day Paving, regional vendors included on the project are: Slagle’s Excavating, Bo’s Hydraulic, Elliott’s Electric, Rowe Insulation, Gupton Sheet Metal, Lewis Metal Work, Boston Lumber Company, Lowes of South Boston, Spaulding Equipment, Satterfield Plumbing and Billy Myers Heating and Air Conditioning.
“We are so fortunate to have so many great local companies to call on to help with everything we are doing here at South Boston Speedway,” said Cathy Rice, the track’s General Manager. “It makes it so much easier when we have people we know and trust from our community to help with this project.”
The capital improvement plan will continue over the next two years with the lighting and sound system being upgraded along with scoreboard updates and the addition of fan amenities and conveniences, which will include a kids’ playground.
New grandstands were installed before the 2016 season began.
