Darlington Raceway dedicates garage to Five Time Winner Cale Yarborough

It was 1968 when the famous Wood Brothers Ford drove to victory lane at Darlington Raceway in what would be the first of five wins for Timmonsville native Yarborough.

Yarborough who the first time he visited his hometown track snuck under the fence to watch the races probably never imaged it would set him on a course of five wins in his career.

“I slipped under the fence when I came to see my first race and now. I’ve got a garage named after me.” Said Yarborough

Over the course of 83 career wins and three consecutive championships in NASCAR premier series starting in 1976, five wins would come at Darlington in 1968, 1973, 1974, 1978 with the final win coming in 1982.

Track president Kerry Tharp noted during the dedication. “The opportunity to name the garage area in his honor means a great deal to the track, to this part of the state and to NASCAR as well,” he said.

“There’s no more appropriate driver to name it after than Cale, a native son.”
