Late Model Stock Car Champion remains undecided heading into season finale

“It’s too close to call!”

That’s the phrase that one could use to describe the battle for the Late Model Stock Car division track championship at Kingsport Speedway. Four drivers are currently within striking distance of capturing the 2016 season crown.

22 points are all that separate the top four drivers in the Late Model championship point standings.

Ronnie McCarty, Zeke Shell, Wayne Hale and Kres VanDyke could all claim the title in the season’s final race on Friday, Aug. 26. With twin Late Model features on tap for that night, the difference in points can easily be overcome.

McCarty currently leads the hunt for the championship title. The defending track champion has won four times this season and is looking to repeat as champion.

McCarty’s lead is slim, though. Trailing just two points behind is Shell in second place.

Shell has three wins on the season and is looking for his first track championship.

The battle between McCarty and Shell will be a close one. Through 16 races this season, both drivers have only finished outside the top 10 only once.

In third place is Hale. Hale won last year’s championship at nearby Lonesome Pine Raceway (Coeburn, Virginia). Hale hasn’t won a race this season but he certainly has remained consistent. Hale has no finish worse than fifth throughout the entire season.

And finally, there’s VanDyke. VanDyke has the most wins this season at seven. But hard luck got VanDyke during the last Late Model race. The 2014 track championship was battling with McCarty for the lead in the Aug. 12 feature when he spun and hit the inside frontstretch wall.

It’s going to be a can’t miss event in just over one week when the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car division takes to “The Concrete Jungle.” With four drivers in contention for the Speedway’s most coveted crown, it’s sure to produce unforgettable moments.

Precision Electrical Company Championship Night will decide it all!
