Test Day for the ValleyStar Credit Union 300 is scheduled for Thursday, October 6, Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell announced today. Traditionally, the Test Day has fallen on the Wednesday two weeks before the race.
The change is the result of a Goodyear tire test scheduled for Tuesday of that week, with Wednesday being held as a rain date.
“We wanted to make this announcement as early as possible,” Campbell said. “So many of the Late Model Stock Car drivers have to take off work and drive long distances to be here, and we want to be mindful of their schedules.”
The ValleyStar Credit Union 300 is NASCAR’s biggest, richest and most prestigious Late Model Stock Car race. The race pays $25,000 to win and sees more than 75 cars show up from across the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions to try and make the 40 car field.
“It’s a big deal,” driver Matt Bowling said. “It’s the biggest race of the year for everyone in Late Model Stock. It has the biggest pay out and is the biggest track that most of these guys race on.”
Bowling lives just 10 minutes from Martinsville Speedway and currently leads the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national points standings.
“Being from Ridgeway, it’s a big deal to me,” he said. “It’s in my hometown.”
Last year Tommy Lemons Jr. held off a furious last lap charge from Timothy Peters to win his second grandfather clock trophy.
The ValleyStar Credit Union 300 is scheduled for October 16. The day starts with three 25-lap heat races and a last chance race to set the starting lineup and concludes with the 200-lap feature race.
