Three-Time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Tony Stewart to Make 2016 Debut at Richmond International Raceway

It’s well known in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series that you can’t keep Tony Stewart down. This weekend at Richmond International Raceway we welcome Stewart back to racing as he starts his 2016 season.

Stewart missed the first eight races of the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season due to a non-racing related injury. Prior to the injury, Stewart announced that 2016 would be his final season in the Sprint Cup Series after 18 years in the series. Richmond is a fitting place for Stewart to make his return, as this is the site of his first win in the Sprint Cup Series back in 1999. RIR was the first of three wins during his rookie season.

“We’re thrilled to have Tony back at the track with us,” said Dennis Bickmeier, President of Richmond International Raceway. “There has been something missing out on the track with Stewart not there, and now this weekend in Richmond, the void will be filled. RIR is the perfect place for him to make his return since he got his first win here back in 1999. What a great moment it will be for this past champion to make his first start in his final season at the place where he got his first win in this series.”
