Luke Sorrow Wins Again In Greenville-Pickens Limited Late Model 75

On a windy Saturday night at Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Easley, South Carolina, Luke Sorrow walked off with his second victory at the track this season in the 75-lap limited late model series feature.

Other winners included Robin Darnell (his second) in the Super Stocks, Charlie Meinders (his first) in the Pure Stocks, Terry Thurston in the Renegades and Donovan Beacham in a torrid 4-Cylinder battle to the finish.

Luke Sorrow and Colby Howard, a pair of 14-year-olds, led the limiteds down for their 75-lap affair. Sorrow got the jump on the start and his sister-in-law Taylor Sorrow also passed Howard to take second. They ran that way for the first 32 laps until fourth place runner Bob Root crashed in turn three, also involving Phillip Peters.

Root was towed to the pits. Andrew Cordell, running fifth at the time of the yellow, stopped for a windshield cleaning and had to also go to the tail. Before the restart, he had a mechanical problem on the front straightaway and had to be towed to the pit area as the attrition escalated quickly.

This meant that Luke Sorrow, Taylor Sorrow, Howard, Tasha Kummer and Adam Satterfield now made up the top five for the restart with 43 laps left. Ron Hall, Phillip Peters and Anthony Miller followed.

When the green flag flew once again it was Luke Sorrow driving away and building a lead he would never relinquish. Running some of his fastest times at the end of the race, Luke crossed the line for his second Greenville-Pickens feature win of the year with a margin of nearly two seconds.

Taylor Sorrow finished up in second, Howard crossed the line third, Kummer held on to fourth and fifth went to newcomer Adam Satterfield, racing at the track for the first time this year. Hall finished sixth, Miller seventh and Peters, who made a pit stop after the lap 32 restart and returned to the race six laps down, ended up in eighth place.

The Pure Stock class hit the half-mile for their feature event. Buck Simmons in the No. 71 and Ashley Granata in the No. 28 alongside in position two.

When the green flag dropped, neither of them went to the front. The No. 57 of Chris Meinders charged up the outside and had the lead by the time they hit turn three on the first lap! Chris’s son Charlie was also on the move and began to charge into the top three.

There were no yellow flags in this race, and plenty of two and three-wide action. Simmons stayed in second for much of the race until mechanical issues caused him to drop back, allowing father and son to begin a battle for the lead that lasted right down to the wire.

At the checkers it was Charlie Meinders on the outside hitting the stripe first with father Chris second and Spencer Morgan third in the No. 33. It was the first ever win for Charlie, and he was one happy fella in victory lane. His father and his brother Zack, who finished seventh, joined him in the family celebration.

Next out on the track were the 4-cylinders. Chad Redding and Don Tavernia comprised the front row for this 15-lap main event, but once again the story came from farther back as Donovan Beacham began his charge to the front early and got there fast.

Redding sped off with the lead and managed to keep a few car lengths in front of Beacham and Tommy Davis until lap 10 when Michael Webster and Derek Fowler brought out the yellow in turn three.

Both cars continued and this set up a five lap dash to the finish. Beacham would not be denied as he made a power move off the outside groove to take the lead and never looked back en-route to his first win of the season. Redding had to settle for second. Davis, Dannon Esco and Chad Tavernia rounded out the top five.

The Renegades were next to race, scheduled for a 20-lap distance. Terry Thurston in the No. 99 led flag to flag to pick up a caution-free victory.

The No. 14 of “Fast Eddie” Ray was hot on his tail the entire distance and even got a nose underneath a couple of times but could not find a way to take the top spot. Ray had to watch his mirror, as the No. 4 of Spenser Darnell was right there applying the pressure.

At the checkers it was Thurston getting the win with Ray, Darnell, two-time 2016 winner Bobby Emory and Steve Guthrie all finishing in the top five.

For a nightcap, the Super Stocks took to the historic racing surface for a 25-lap grind. “Rapid” Ricky Stephens started on the pole but before he could get to the back straightaway his mirror was filled with the No. 4 of Robin Darnell, who bolted from his fourth starting spot to pass Stephens and lead lap one!

As if shot out of a cannon, Darnell pulled away to a quarter-straightaway lead and went on to win for the second time this year in a race that went yellow-flag free all the way through to the checkered.

Stephens hung on to second, with two-time 2016 winner Tim Sams making his way through to third. Fourth at the finish was Travis Cox and Stanley Pressley ended up in fifth.
