Thaxton Captures NASCAR Late Model 100 At South Boston Speedway

Austin Thaxton fended off last-lap challenges from defending NASCAR Whelen All American Series National Champion Lee Pulliam of Alton, Virginia and former NASCAR Whelen All American Series National Champion Peyton Sellers of Danville, Virginia to win Saturday’s NASCAR Late Model 100 at South Boston Speedway.

Thaxton grabbed the lead on the final restart that set up a two-lap dash to the finish, and was just ahead of Pulliam and Sellers when they got together and crashed in the fourth turn as they headed to the checkered flag.

Defending South Boston Speedway Champion Matt Bowling of Ridgeway, Virginia, who was running fourth, ducked around the spinning cars of Pulliam and Sellers and followed Thaxton across the finish line to take second place.

Mark Wertz of Chesapeake, Virginia, Brenden Queen of Chesapeake, Virginia and Sellers rounded out the top five finishers.

Josh Oakley of Rougemont, North Carolina, Pulliam, Justin Carroll of Lanexa, Virginia, Dennis Holdren of Roanoke, Virginia and Chuck Lawson of Providence, North Carolina completed the top 10 finishers.

Thaxton’s victory, his first of the season at America’s Hometown Track, came by a scant .573-second. He led 59 laps of the race that had to be extended to 101 laps to make the green-white-checker finish.

Throckmorton sweeps Limited Sportsman twinbill

Joey Throckmorton is now a perfect three-for-three for the season in the NASCAR Limited Sportsman Division at South Boston Speedway.

Throckmorton swept Saturday’s pair of 25-lap NASCAR Limited Sportsman Division races, winning the pole and scoring a flag-to-flag win in the opener, and rallying from his sixth-place starting position in the second race to overtake race leader Tommy Peregoy of Clarksville, Virginia to earn the win in the second race.

The South Boston, Virginia resident edged fellow South Boston, Virginia resident Mike Jones by .990-second to win the opener, with David Latour Jr. of Advance, North Carolina, Calvin Meadows of Martinsville, Virginia and Peregoy rounding out the top five.

Peregoy finished second in the second race, trailing Throckmorton by 1.271-second at the finish. Daniel Moss of Danville, Virginia, Mike Chambers of Timberlake, North Carolina and Latour completed the top five finishers in the second race.

Humblet Family scores big in Modified Division twinbill

Chris Humblet of Shiloh, North Carolina, and his father, Jimmy Humblet, also of Shiloh, North Carolina, shared a big family day Saturday at South Boston Speedway.

The younger Humblet won the pole and scored a flag-to-flag win in the first of the day’s pair of 25-lap Modified Division races to earn his first victory of the season at the .4-mile oval.

Jimmy Humblet started on the outside pole in the second race and led all but one lap in winning the nightcap and scoring his second win of the season at South Boston Speedway.

Chris Humblet edged his dad by 2.402 seconds in winning the opening race, with Matt Slye of Williamsburg, Virginia, Robbie Babb of Chesapeake, Virginia and Robert Conner of Colonial Heights, Virginia rounding out the top five finishers.

Defending division champion Mike Rudy of Prince George, Virginia trailed Jimmy Humblet by .935-second at the finish of the second race, with Babb, Slye and Conner completing the top five finishers.

Hupp gains first Pure Stock Division win of season

Randy Hupp of Halifax, Virginia survived a tough late-race battle with Harrison Walker of Buffalo Junction, Virginia to win Saturday’s 30-lap Budweiser Pure Stock Division race.

Hupp’s first win of the season came by a narrow margin of .385-second.

Pole winner Bruce Mayo of Halifax, Virginia finished third after having led over half of the race, with Jordan Pickrel of Keeling, Virginia and Scott Phillips of Halifax, Virginia rounding out the top five finishers.

Bralley wins Hornets Division race

Guy Bralley of Asheboro, North Carolina made his first visit of the season to South Boston Speedway count in a big way Saturday by taking home the win in the 15-lap race for the Budweiser Hornets Division.

Apparent runner-up Kenny Mills Jr. of Alton, Virginia was disqualified after failing a post-race technical inspection by track NASCAR officials, giving the runner-up spot to apparent third-place finisher Kevin Currin of Chase City, Virginia.

Drew Dawson of Nathalie, Virginia, Justin Dawson and Brandon Radford completed the top five finishers.

Next Race At South Boston Speedway

South Boston Speedway will go under the lights for the first time in 2016 as it hosts one of its bigger events of the season, the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour 150 racing program, on Saturday night April 9.

A 150-lap race for the stars and cars of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour will headline the action, with the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division being featured in twin 75-lap races. The four-race program will be capped by a 15-lap race for the Hornets Division.

The first of the night’s four races will get the green flag at 7 p.m.

Advance tickets are on sale for $10 each, with advance tickets being available until 5 p.m. on Friday, April 8. Adult general admission tickets on race day will be priced at $15. Youth ages 7-12 will be admitted for $5 each with a paying adult. Kids under six years of age will be admitted free with a paying adult.
