Blackened Surf, Longbeard’s Last Stand and Deer & Carrot Soufflé were just a few of the tasty dishes found at the 11th annual Alabama Wildlife Federation Wild Game Cook-Off and Silent Auction last Saturday at the Talladega Superspeedway!
With 47 cook teams and close to 1200 members and guests in attendance, Chonita’s Cookers (from Alex City, Al) captured the top prize of “Best Overall,” with their scrumptious Pheasant Isabella. Chonita’s Cookers, which consisted of Mark McGrady, Severa McGrady, Angel Davis and Joey Davis, will be invited to the state finals held at Lanark in Millbrook in August 6, 2016 to compete for the title of AWF 2016 Wild Game Cook-Off State Champion.
Nearly 1200 people attended the event and got to sample each delicacy, enjoy music and entertainment, and bid on a variety of auction items. In addition, many were able to meet 1976 Talladega Superspeedway NASCAR Sprint Cup Series winner Dave Marcis, who was a part of the cook teams.

Fish Division: First Place – Bama Girl cooking Blackened Surf; Second Place – Peppertree Pit Crew including Jeff Verner, Hayden Verner, John Mosley and Tyler Verner cooking Crawfish Cakes; Third Place – Chonita’s Cookers including Mark McGrady, Severa McGrady, Angel Davis and Joey Davis cooking Cajun Shrimp Nachos.
Fowl Division: First Place – Chonita’s Cookers including Mark McGrady, Severa McGrady, Angel Davis and Joey Davis cooking Pheasant Isabella; Second Place – Smokin’ Aces including Jason Hilyer, Jackie Hilyer, Greg Moore and Jesse Weeks cooking Longbeard’s Last Stand; Third Place – Peppertree Pit Crew including Jeff Verner, Hayden Verner, John Mosley and Tyler Verner cooking Cajun Quail Cordon Bleu.
Game Division: First Place – The Man Cookers including Gerald Hill, William Hill and Jamie Johnson cooking Deer & Carrot Soufflé; Second Place – The Lumbee Smokers including Bracy Cummings, Jr., Bracy Cummings, Sr., Derrick Cummings and Tim Borden cooking Rutrow; Third Place – Ren Hen including Dan Nelson, Mindy Nelson, Matt Nelson and Hank Donald cooking Buck Bite Sliders.
Youth: First Place – Smokin’ & Jokin’ cooking Turkey Roulade Florentine; Second Place – Hawk Ridge Farm #2 including Alex Armstrong, Olivia Armstrong, Dylan Ray and Austin Ray cooking Troy Oinkman Burker; Third Place – Hooks & Horns including Chris Alexander, Amy Alexander, Ray Alexander, Tommy Johnson and Cody Hill cooking Buck, Bread & Cheese.
Potluck: First Place – Chevy Team including Jeff Parris, Ashley Parris, Eric Parris and Chelsea Parris cooking Jack-A-Lope Chili; Second Place – Back At It including Jeff Wynn cooking Smoking Hot Quail Legs; Third Place – Wynning For Life including Lauren Wynn cooking Smokin’ Wild Hog Stew.
The People’s Choice Award sponsored by Civilian Marksmanship Park went to Peppertree Pit Crew including Jeff Verner, Hayden Verner, John Mosley and Tyler Verner. 1st Place Presentation Award went to Spices Smokehouse, while The Man Cookers took home Best Presentation Runner-Up.
The purpose of AWF Wild Game Cook-Offs is to supply a place for AWF members to interact, for non-members to learn more about AWF, and to provide the opportunity to raise funds to support AWF and its programs and projects. The Cook-Offs also demonstrate that sportsmen/women utilize the wild game and fish they harvest and cook it with care, skill and expertise to produce great table fare.
