Chonita’s Cookers Win Best Overall During Talladega Superspeedway’s 11th Annual Wild Game Cook-Off

Blackened Surf, Longbeard’s Last Stand and Deer & Carrot Soufflé were just a few of the tasty dishes found at the 11th annual Alabama Wildlife Federation Wild Game Cook-Off and Silent Auction last Saturday at the Talladega Superspeedway!

With 47 cook teams and close to 1200 members and guests in attendance, Chonita’s Cookers (from Alex City, Al) captured the top prize of “Best Overall,” with their scrumptious Pheasant Isabella. Chonita’s Cookers, which consisted of Mark McGrady, Severa McGrady, Angel Davis and Joey Davis, will be invited to the state finals held at Lanark in Millbrook in August 6, 2016 to compete for the title of AWF 2016 Wild Game Cook-Off State Champion. 

Nearly 1200 people attended the event and got to sample each delicacy, enjoy music and entertainment, and bid on a variety of auction items. In addition, many were able to meet 1976 Talladega Superspeedway NASCAR Sprint Cup Series winner Dave Marcis, who was a part of the cook teams.

The People’s Choice Award sponsored by Civilian Marksmanship Park went to Peppertree Pit Crew including Jeff Verner, Hayden Verner, John Mosley and Tyler Verner.  1st Place Presentation Award went to Spices Smokehouse, while The Man Cookers took home Best Presentation Runner-Up.

The purpose of AWF Wild Game Cook-Offs is to supply a place for AWF members to interact, for non-members to learn more about AWF, and to provide the opportunity to raise funds to support AWF and its programs and projects.  The Cook-Offs also demonstrate that sportsmen/women utilize the wild game and fish they harvest and cook it with care, skill and expertise to produce great table fare.
