Can’t stop loving you comes true as fan proposes in front of Sammy Hagar at recent AAA Texas 500

Jimmie Johnson may have walked away with the Charlie 1 Horse cowboy hat and iconic hat trophy following his recent victory in the AAA Texas 500, but the biggest winner of the day at Texas Motor Speedway may have been Vernon Holloway, of Arlington, Texas.

Holloway was attending the Nov. 8 AAA Texas 500 with girlfriend Melissa Geer after winning a special speedway promotion at a recent Van Halen concert, but he decided to make this even one to truly remember. The prize package included tickets to the race and a meet-and-greet with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Sammy Hagar, who was headlining the Loud and Proud Pre-Race Show Fueled by American Ethanol with his band, The Circle.

The opportunity to meet the “Red Rocker” himself must have gotten Holloway thinking of the song, “When It’s Love,” as he promptly proposed to Geer on one knee in front of Hagar. She accepted on the spot.

“It was pretty exciting,” Holloway said of having Hagar standing alongside for his proposal. “We had a great day! That was the best race I’ve ever been to and I’ve been to races 12 times.”

Hagar, who wrote many of Van Halen’s top love ballads, relished the roll of sharing the moment with the couple.

“He was surprised,” Holloway said. “At first he was like, ‘You are going to use me for this,’ but he was laughing. Then he hugged and congratulated her and me. It’s certainly a moment the two of us will ever forget.”

Holloway, certain of one day popping the question to Geer but unsure of when, was presented the ideal opportunity to share the moment with one of the couple’s favorite rock-and-roll singers.

“We both really like Van Halen,” Holloway said. “It made it the perfect opportunity. Plus it was her first race she had been to and probably will be her most memorable.”

Hagar did not let the couple walk away without a memento, taking a photo with the two and signing a specially designed Texas Motor Speedway guitar that was included in his prize package that read, “Congrats on the proposal.”

While the couple has not selected a wedding date, Holloway said there is one thing that will be for certain when they share their vows.

“I’m sure we will play ‘Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love,'” Holloway said with a chuckle. “There will be a couple of Van Halen songs going, no doubt about that.”
