Kansas Speedway gives Jeff Gordon pedal car replica of his first race car

Kansas Speedway President Patrick Warren, along with students from North Kansas City (Mo.) Technical School, presented three-time Kansas Speedway winner Jeff Gordon a pedal car replica of his first race car, a Quarter Midget.

When Gordon announced earlier this year that 2015 would be his final full-time season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Kansas Speedway officials wanted to do something special for the driver who is so intertwined with Kansas Speedway’s history.

So the research began. Warren saw a custom-made pedal car that the school had made for motorcycle racer and instructor Hector St. John. And with Kansas Speedway known for giving away a pedal car to each pole winner, an idea was hatched – a pedal car replica of Gordon’s first car.

And with that St. John put Kansas Speedway officials in touch with North Kansas City Technical School. The students, who are all juniors or seniors in high school, wanted to make something special for Gordon so they diligently went about learning everything they could about his first race car. In addition to their schoolwork, the students volunteered for this project and worked weekends and evenings for weeks crafting the fiberglass body to the bumpers to the roll cage, ensuring a perfect gift for Gordon.

Racing returns to Kansas Speedway tonight with the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards season finale (Full Throttle S’loonshine 98.9), tomorrow with the NASCAR XFINITY Series (Kansas Lottery 300), and on Sunday with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (Hollywood Casino 400, the fifth race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup), and tickets are currently on sale and available by calling 866.460.7223, logging onto www.kansasspeedway.com or at Gate B on the day of the race.
