Danny Bohn has had plenty of success in the 100-lap races in the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series.
After just two 100-lap races this season at Bowman Gray Stadium, Bohn has won the $3,000 Fans’ Challenge on May 11 after electing to go to the back of the field and then fighting forward to a fourth place finish. And sure enough, Bohn won Saturday night’s Elite Underground Utility 100 by edging Burt Myers.
“It gives you time to race,” Bohn said. “Like the twin 25s, it’s just single-field restarts. You really don’t get a chance to race. The 100-lappers, I feel like it’s more of a driver’s race. You’ve got to pace yourself. You’ve got to pick and choose your lines. You’ve got to make good passes and keep all four tires going. That’s the racing I enjoy, the longer races.”
After a full-field redraw after qualifying in which Myers qualified fastest, Bohn started seventh and Myers started 12th. Bohn, the 2014 Modified champion had to hold off Myers, the 10-time champion down the stretch.
“Me and Burt have respect for each other,” Bohn said. “He’s points racing, so I didn’t think he’d do anything stupid. Obviously, if I messed up and he could’ve got me, he would’ve. But I didn’t expect him to try to rough me up to pass me because I know he’s points racing. He knows he’s points racing, and he knows I’ll be back.”
Myers agreed with Bohn’s assessment.
“My car was off tonight,” Myers said. “I’ve talked about how the tires are so inconsistent here. They got a fresh batch of tires in, so I got two of the new code and two of the old code. And we mixed ‘em, and we got one of the fresher tires on the left rear. A fresher tire will gain more heat, which makes it grow.
“So, the car was just way too tight all night. I was a little better than Danny, but enough to be aggressive enough to make a move. But starting 12th and coming through the field and the way it worked out – gaining points on everybody that matters. Hey, it ain’t too bad.”
Trey Hutchens started on the pole, but Brian Loftin quickly took over the lead. Tim Brown motored past Loftin on lap 27 to claim the top spot. Then Bohn took the lead with 20 laps remaining after he and Tim Brown had been racing side-by-side for much of the race.
“You’ve just obviously got to get to the front couple there and go to work from there,” Bohn said. “But Tim had a lot of good restarts. I knew if you wheel-to-wheel him into one, I was hoping I could gethim down a little bit and get that run above, which ultimately we did. And then, it was on defense after that. But we just had a really good car.”
Myers tucked in behind Bohn and Brown and was able to slip past the #83 of Brown.
“My goal was to keep it tight with the 57 (Bohn) and keep Tim out,” Myers said. “Next thing you know I was just focusing on the windshield not the rearview mirror. I don’t know where he ended up. Don’t really care. I was focused on going forward.”
Bohn just had to withstand Myers 12 more laps to get his 18th career win. He did just that.
“I wasn’t running as hard as I could behind (Brown),” Bohn said. “I could see that he didn’t have the greatest car tonight. But anytime you’re leading and then can control the race it’s (good).”
Myers was runner-up, followed by Chris Fleming, Jason Myers, and Brown.
Also, Lee Jeffreys was the only driver who elected to take the Fans’ Challenge, but he finished ninth and out of the money.
In the Law Offices of John Barrow Sportsman Series, Zack Ore was the beneficiary of a bump between previous Sterling Plemmons and Tommy Neal on lap 16 as they fought for the lead. Ore claimed the top spot and won his third race of the season.
Plemmons sat on the pole for the race, but Neal, who started third, was on Plemmons’ bumper throughout the first 16 laps. Neal bumped Plemmons on lap 13, but there was a caution and Plemmons retained the lead.
Plemmons had a good restart, but Neal continued to lag just behind Plemmons for the lead. Neal bumped Plemmons again, which spun each driver out of the lead. Ore, who was in third, moved into the lead and led the final four laps for the win.
“Yeah, man, I knew what was going to happen,” Ore said. “I knew Tommy was going to push him. Either they were going to wreck each other, or Tommy was going to go and I’m going to go with him. It worked out for us. We worked our tail off. This crew worked their tail off.
“This morning, we come to the morning practice, first time all season, tore the car all to pieces. Took it home, come back at 4 o’clock and this is why we win. We’re going to win the championship.”
Zack Clifton finished runner-up, followed by Connor Branch, Neal, and Brandon Brendle.
After Plemmons was bumped by Neal in the first Sportsman race, he was able to get some redemption in the second 20-lap race by winning.
It is just the second career win for Plemmons, who started second after Ore drew 12 in the Madhouse Scramble, which inverted the field in the second Sportsman race there.
“That first one, I think he dumped me in that first race,” Plemmons said. “We should’ve had that one, too. But it is what is what is. We get a little redemption on this race.”
Braden Mills finished runner-up in the second 20-lap Sportsman race, followed by Chase Robertson, Michael Adams, and Neal.
Christian Joyce won the 20-lap QRC HVAC & Refrigeration Street Stock Series race after bumping Nick Wall out of the lead on lap 15.
Joyce was behind Wall as they turned around turn 4 of lap 15. Wall spun out, which brought out the caution flag.
There was one caution on lap 18 after Cooper Lowe spun out. That brought out the green-white checkered flag, and Joyce cruised to the win, his second of the season.
“I got in back of him a little bit,” Joyce said of the bump to Nick Wall. “I feel like it’s a shot if he gave me I could hold it, but he can race me how he wants from here. It’s up to him. I understand.”
Andy Southern was runner-up to Joyce, followed by Austin Jones, Brad Lewis, and Brad Lewis’ daughter, Emilee Lewis.
“Man, we blew a motor this morning,” Joyce said. “And left here at 12 o’clock, went to my uncle’s house and swapped motors. Didn’t get back here until 5. I didn’t think we’d be here tonight.”
A.J. Sanders won the 15-lap race in the Q104.1 Stadium Series after starting on the pole and withstanding five caution flags.
It was Sanders’ third win of the season and 62nd of his career.
On lap 11, there was a caution after Chuck Wall moved past Brad Mickalowski. However, Mickalowski bumped Wall, which caused Wall to get hit from the front and rear.
“I really did hate to see Chuck Wall having a mess out there because, you know, it looks like it’s going to come down to me and him in the championship. And I hate to see anybody get out like that,” said Sanders.
Grayson Keaton was runner-up, followed by Brad Mickalowski, Austin Long, and Tyler McDonald. Results are still unofficial.
Next week is jam-packed with racing action with double points in each series. There will be a 100-lap race in the Law Offices of John Barrow Sportsman Series. The drivers will qualify for position with the top six re-drawing for position. The double-file restart cone will also be in play.
Also on the schedule will be the Midway Music Hall and Event Center Stadium Stock 50, which is the longest race of the season for the Q104.1 Stadium Stock Series. Plus there are twin 25-lap races in the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series and a 20-lap race in the QRC HVAC & Refrigeration Street Stock Series on the agenda as well.
The final act next Saturday is the Midway Mobile Storage Chain Race, which is a race with two cars chained to each other.
