Former NASCAR Whelen All American Series and South Boston Speedway track champion Lee Pulliam added to his win total at the .4-mile oval Saturday night, sweeping the pair of 75-lap NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division races that highlighted Saturday night’s Italian Delight Family Restaurant Presents Frutopia Not Just Frozen Yogurt NASCAR Late Model Twin 75’s racing program.
The sweep ran Pulliam’s win total at South Boston Speedway this season to seven. He now has a total of 17 wins in 32 starts for the season.
Pulliam, from Alton, Virginia, scored a flag-to-flag win in the opener, edging runner-up Matt Bowling of Ridgeway, Virginia by 1.789-seconds. Austin Thaxton of South Boston, Virginia finished third with Mark Wertz of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Dennis Holdren of Roanoke, Virginia rounding out the top five finishers.
With an inverted start among the top finishers of the first race, Pulliam started fourth but was able to pass Thaxton for the lead on lap 32. Once in front, with no caution flags to slow the pace, Pulliam cruised to a 1.827-second win over Thaxton, with Bowling, Josh Oakley of Rougemont, North Carolina and G.R. Waldrop of Moseley, Virginia rounding out the top five finishers.
Eversole, Crews Split Limited Sportsman Twinbill
J.D. Eversole of Richmond, Virginia and Trey Crews of Halifax, Virginia split wins in the night’s pair of 25-lap Limited Sportsman Division races.
The win in the first 25-lap race was the first win of the season at South Boston Speedway for Eversole, who was the runner-up in last year’s battle for the South Boston Speedway Limited Sportsman Division title. He led flag-to-flag and edged defending division champion Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. by 1.140-seconds.
Crews finished third, Calvin Meadows of Martinsville, Virginia finished fourth and Trevor Ward of Winston-Salem, North Carolina rounded out the top five finishers.
With an inverted start among the top finishers of the first race, Crews started on the pole for the nightcap and led the entire race, finishing 1.870-seconds ahead of Eversole. Ward finished third with Meadows and Billy Myers of Hurt, Virginia rounding out the top five finishers.
The win in the nightcap was the third of the season for Crews.
Stuart Crews Sweeps Pure Stock Twinbill
It was a big night for Stuart Crews of Long Island, Virginia.
Crews ran his season victory total at South Boston Speedway to three by sweeping the night’s pair of 15-lap races for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division.
He started on the outside pole in the first race and passed pole winner Greg Autry for the lead on the ninth lap. A late caution set up a six-lap dash to the finish, with Crews edging Autry by slim margin to take the win. D.J. Moser of South Boston, Virginia finished third with Bruce Mayo of Halifax, Virginia and Johnny Layne of Nathalie, Virginia completing the top five.
With an inverted start among the top finishers of the first race, Crews started third in the second race, but darted into the lead on the opening lap and sped to his second win of the night over Autry, Moser, Mayo and Scott Phillips of Halifax, Virginia.
Garnett Wins Hornets Division Race
Todd Garnett of Drakes Branch, Virginia took the lead from Eric Winslow with six laps to go and held on to win the 15-lap Budweiser Hornets Division race. The win was Garnett’s first win of the season.
Winslow, of Pelham, North Carolina, finished second with Kenny Mills Jr. of Alton, Virginia, Drew Dawson and Michael Farmer of Halifax, Virginia rounding out the top five finishers.
Next Race At South Boston Speedway
Racing action will return to South Boston Speedway Saturday night, August 15 when the stars and the Super Late Model cars of the Pro All Stars Series make their second visit of the season at America’s Hometown Track for the 7 p.m. running of the PASS Super Late Model 150 racing program.
The action will be fast and furious as the stars of the PASS Super Late Model circuit battle it out in a 150-lap race. In addition, the competitors of the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division will go at it in twin 75-lap races.
Adding to the action-packed three-race card is a 25-lap race for Legends Cars.
The race day schedule calls for registration to begin and pit gates to open at 12 noon, with practice to run from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Grandstand gates will open and ticket sales will start at 4:30 p.m.
Qualifying time trials will start at 4:45 p.m. A Fan Appreciation event will be held trackside from 6 p.m. until 6:45 p.m. Pre-race ceremonies will start at 6:45 p.m., with the first race of the night starting at 7 p.m.
Advance tickets are on sale for $10 each and may be purchased at the South Boston Speedway office until 5 p.m. Friday, August 14. Adult general admission tickets on race day will be priced at $15, with youth ages 7-12 admitted for $5 and kids ages six and under admitted free with a paying adult.
