Speedway Children’s Charities’ Sadler Honored With Distinguished Veteran Airman Award

Speedway Children’s Charities (SCC) National Executive Director Retired U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Tom Sadler will be given the Distinguished Veteran Airman Award from the Armed Services Council during the organization’s annual Air Force Birthday luncheon Wednesday, Sept. 14, at The Union League of Philadelphia.

Gen. Sadler’s name was submitted for consideration for the award by a member of the Armed Services Council, Lt. Col. Scott Murphy, U.S. Air Force (ret), a Vietnam War veteran who served under Sadler’s command at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey.

During the ceremony Gen. Sadler will receive the Union League Bowl from the Armed Services Council, which the organization presents to “individuals of distinction who have demonstrated the highest ideals of the League’s motto: ‘Amor Patriae Ducit, or ‘Love of Country Leads’.”

“It came as a shock to me that I was nominated for this award, I’m just completely surprised,” said Sadler. “But it’s a real honor and I’m thankful for the recognition.”

Gen. Sadler has served as executive director of SCC since 1990. Under his leadership the organization raises funds for more than 400 children’s organizations nationwide each year, impacting more than 300,000 needy children annually.

Before his work with SCC, Gen. Sadler served his country for more than 37 years in the U.S. Air Force. Sadler retired from the Air Force in 1983 as commander of the 21st Air Force at McGuire Air Force Base, commanding some 37,000 people in 70 locations in 15 countries on five continents. At the time of his retirement, he was the only general on active duty who had flown in combat in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, flying more than 400 combat missions.

“General Sadler’s service to not just the children but our country has been inspiring,” said Marcus Smith, president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway and vice chairman of Speedway Children’s Charities. “On behalf of the entire Speedway Children’s Charities family, I want to personally congratulate him on earning the Distinguished Veteran Airman Award and thank him for his service.”
