Richard Petty’s final race car returning to AMS at the Summit Racing Equipment Atlanta Motorama

Richard Petty’s No. 43 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix, which he drove at Atlanta Motor Speedway in his final career NASCAR race on Nov. 15, 1992, will return to the track where it was last driven in the 2nd Annual Summit Racing Equipment Atlanta Motorama April 18-19.

The car, which remains unaltered from the day Petty last drove it, resides full time in the Richard Petty Museum in Randleman, North Carolina, Petty’s hometown. 

In the final race of his 35-year racing career, the 1992 Hooters 500, Petty qualified in the 39th position and finished 35th after a crash on the front stretch on the 96th lap and subsequent fire knocked him out of the race. 

With a missing hood and severe front end damage, Petty’s crew worked in the garage to get the car running again near the end of the race, and “The King” was able to take the checkered flag, as his storied driving career and a chapter in NASCAR history came to a close. 

The final race in the 1992 NASCAR Winston Cup Series is considered one of the greatest NASCAR races of all time and a changing of the guard among some of the sport’s most well-known drivers. While it was Petty’s final race, it was also Jeff Gordon’s Sprint Cup Series debut. Dawsonville, Georgia’s Bill Elliott went on to win the race, but the day belonged to owner/driver Alan Kulwicki, who clenched the 1992 NASCAR Winston Cup championship in a close finish, as the final points standings were decided in the closing laps.  

Petty’s 1992 Pontiac will be on display at the Petty’s Garage display located outside the festival’s show car garage, near the vendor midway. 

Admission to Summit Racing Equipment Atlanta Motorama is $12 per day. Kids ages 6 to 11 will be admitted for $5, and kids ages 5 and under will be admitted for free. Camping at the speedway is available during the event, and full hook-up or dry camping can be reserved for the weekend.
