Delta Speedway presented by Valley Strong Credit Union fires off for a 38th season of dirt track racing excitement this Saturday night, April 20, at the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds in Stockton. The 1/7th mile dirt track has provided family-friendly thrills with Micro Sprints zipping around the speedway. Both the starting point for many open wheel racing careers and a career destination for grassroots racers hungry for checkered flags, Stockton’s Delta Speedway has been an integral part of the fabric of racing in the central valley for decades.
General Admission tickets are just $10 for adults while juniors ages 6-12, seniors, and military are $5, and kids 5 & under are FREE! Pit passes are $25. Fans who cannot attend the action in person can view flag-to-flag coverage on Dirt2Media, the speedway’s 2024 Pay-Per-View partner. Pit gates open at noon with the driver’s meeting at 4:30pm. Hot laps and qualifying will follow.
For the fifth consecutive year, Delta Speedway saw one driver get hot and stamp their place on both the Super 600 and Non-Wing championship trophies in a single season. Sacramento’s Austin Wood ruled both the winged and non-winged Micro Sprint varieties in 2023, darting to eight total wins on the way to the large championship hauls.
Wood joined 2016 double champion Brandon Carey of Ripon, 2019 through 2021 double champion Cade Sarale of Stockton, and 2022 double champion Nikko Panella of Stockton in achieving the feat. Wood was the first of those, however, to not have a previous Delta Speedway crown. 2023 was truly a breakout year for the driver they call “Big A”.
Wood will advance to Winged Sprint Cars in 2024, swinging the gates wide-open for new champions this season. The journey begins Saturday with 30-lap features on tap for both the Super 600 and Non-Wing classes.
Bakersfield’s Nathan Ward claimed the 2023 prize in Restricted, stretching his points lead over 2022 champion Lucas Mauldin of Rancho Murieta on the strength of four victories. Who will prevail this year? A 25-lap main event will kick off the Restricted battles on Saturday night.
Briggs Davis of Manteca is joined by Mauldin and Nikko Panella as back-to-back Jr. Sprints champions in track history following his 2023 performance. Davis won an outstanding nine main events. A 20-lap race and dual heat races are on tap for Delta’s youngest competitors.
