For the fifth consecutive year, The NASCAR Foundation is recognizing the outstanding charitable and volunteer efforts of NASCAR fans by awarding the annual Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award.
The award honors the commitment of The NASCAR Foundation Chairwoman Betty Jane France through her philanthropic and community efforts. The award will be given to a deserving individual who has made a profound impact on children in his or her local community.
“Our region is home to scores of philanthropic efforts to better the lives of children, including the Speediatrics unit in Homestead Hospital,” Homestead-Miami Speedway President Matthew Becherer said. “This is a chance to recognize and elevate those selfless individuals who make a difference in the lives of children here in South Florida, and it would be fantastic to see a local person win up to $100,000 for their deserving charity.”
The Speediatrics unit at Homestead Hospital is the Betty Jane France Children’s Emergency Room, financially supported by Homestead-Miami Speedway, NASCAR and community donations. The unit is one of only two units of its kind in the country. Through these efforts, more than $1 million has been raised for Speediatrics, the only dedicated pediatric unit in the southernmost region of Miami-Dade County.
Four finalists will be chosen from around the country, with each receiving a $25,000 donation to a children’s charity of their choice, a VIP experience to a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race in 2014 and a trip to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion’s Week in Las Vegas, where the winner will be announced and presented the award from France. The winner will also receive a 2015 vehicle from the official sponsor of this year’s Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award.
Nominations will be accepted online at www.NASCAR.com/award. The deadline for nominations is Friday, May 16 at midnight EDT. The finalist who secures the most online votes will be announced as the winner during the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Awards in Las Vegas and will receive a $100,000 donation to their children’s charity.
The goal of this national search is to nominate individuals who have shown a spirit of volunteerism in their support of children causes. The award winner will be based on nominations of individuals by submitting a short story about the community work and focus on supporting children’s charities done by the nominee. The criteria that will determine the winner include their involvement with children’s causes, community impact, and dedication.
