Safeway to operate on-site grocery store for second season at Phoenix

The fan favorite Safeway store will return to Phoenix International Raceway in the camping area  at the race track this March for PIR’s upcoming The Profit on CNBC 500, Presented by Small Business Fueling America NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race weekend Feb. 27-March 2. As the Official Grocery partner of PIR, Safeway will offer race fans an extensive selection of food, snacks and other campground favorites.

”We are excited to welcome Safeway back to PIR once again this spring,” said PIR President Bryan R. Sperber. “The camping experience is a huge part of what makes NASCAR such a special sport, and Safeway provides our race fans everything they need to have the best experience possible in Phoenix.”

The store looks and feels just like Safeway’s 115 stores.  The 17,200-square foot store will open at 7:00 a.m. MST on Tuesday, February 25 and will be open every day throughout race weekend.

Race fans will again be able to find all of their camping and cooking needs at Safeway, from charcoal and firewood to wide selection of groceries, as well as ice, beer, snacks and other campground necessities.  Safeway has increased its range of products by nearly 30 percent, and for the first time will offer spirits for sale in the on-site store.

The store will also serve as the social hub of the campground as race fans start each day with donuts, breakfast burritos and the morning paper, along with fresh Starbucks coffee and signature coffee drinks.

“Safeway is proud to partner with Phoenix International Raceway and welcomes the thousands of NASCAR fans expected throughout race week,” said Nancy Keane, Public Affairs Director for Safeway’s Phoenix Division.  “Safeway’s on-site grocery store promises to provide PIR’s dedicated race fans exemplary service, warm hospitality and an inviting shopping experience.”

In addition to the store, Safeway will also host a “Safeway Race Day Experience” display in the fan midway area adjacent to the grandstands.  The display will feature an old school video arcade, sports den and fan photo area.
