South Carolina or Clemson? Fans decide who wins during Darlington Raceway’s can food drive

In the spirit of giving back for the holiday season, Darlington Raceway is launching a can food drive that will take place from Nov. 8-22, 2013, with proceeds benefiting Harvest Hope of the Pee Dee and The Lord Cares of Darlington.

The event kicks off on Friday, Nov. 8 at the track’s first annual Speed & Feed BBQ Cook-Off and Car Show presented by Piggly Wiggly. Between the hours of 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., fans that bring either five non-perishable food items or make a $10 cash donation will receive laps around the track Too Tough To Tame. On Saturday, Nov. 9, the same program will commence from 8 a.m. – Noon.

Food and monetary donations will also be accepted in the Darlington Raceway ticket office and museum, Monday-Friday, Nov. 11-15 and Nov. 18-22 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. If the donation is made between the hours of 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. on those dates, fans will receive a pace car ride courtesy of the raceway staff.

This can drive will be unique in that it celebrates one of college football’s biggest rivalries, which pits the University of South Carolina versus Clemson University.

USC and Clemson branded barrels will be provided during collection times. Fans will have the opportunity to place their non-perishable food items in the branded barrel of the team they are rooting for (the game takes place on Nov. 29 in Columbia, S.C.). All cash donations will be earmarked for the donors’ favorite team.

Once all donations are tallied and a winner is determined, the track will fly that team’s flag on racetrack property off of Highway 151 on game day.

“Like NASCAR racing, college football is sacred in the state of South Carolina. The fans are so passionate about their team and both USC and Clemson University have really strong programs. We want to capitalize on the passion and rivalry between South Carolina and Clemson fans to raise funds and food donations for two great local organizations that service our community in Harvest Hope and The Lord Cares,” track President Chip Wile said. “We are always looking for opportunities to support our local community and this is a fun way to give back just in time for the holiday season, when families need it most.”

The Speed & Feed BBQ Cook-Off and Car Show presented by Piggly Wiggly is a free admission event. The event takes place from Noon – 10:30 p.m. on Friday, highlighted with chicken wing tasting at 6 p.m. ($5 tasting wristband required) and a concert by the Band of Oz at 7:30 p.m. Saturday will feature BBQ tasting beginning at 11 a.m. ($5 tasting wristband required) and a concert by the John Curtis Lewis Band at Noon.
