Mid-West Drag Racing Series to Air on MAVTV Motorsports Network

Wednesday, Mar 03

Lucas Oil, who has a long history with drag racing, has expanded their commitment to the sport with additional coverage on MAVTV Motorsports Network. MAVTV announced today it will be the broadcast home for the Mid-West Drag Racing Series in 2021 and that Lucas Oil will be the “Official Oil” for the series.

The Summit Racing Equipment Mid-West Drag Racing Series presented by J&A Service has become the premier regional drag racing tour in America.  This year, all eight events will be shown live on the new MAVTV Plus platform.

“Because of our love of drag racing, Lucas Oil has long been associated with the sport,” said Morgan Lucas, President of Lucas Oil Products.  “We wanted to expand our support of drag racing  and I felt that  the Mid-West Series is a perfect fit.  The passion from the series’ racers and the action that is produced is exciting and we are looking forward to bringing this brand of racing to a new audience this year.”

The Mid-West Drag Racing Series will feature eight events at six different tracks in five different states.  The 1/8 mile drag racing competition spotlights many different classes of cars, including Top Alcohol Funny Car, Pro Mods, and Top Dragster.

“This is a dream come true and something I have imagined in my mind since the beginning of the series (2017),” said Keith Haney, Founder of the Mid-West Drag Racing Series.  “I’ve always wanted to spotlight the amazing racers in this series.  I think fans deserve to meet these racers and what better platform than MAVTV and its networks.  The race tracks, marketing partners and everyone knows this series is all about helping the sport stay healthy and Lucas Oil does so much to ensure that happens.”

Three events from the Mid-West Drag Racing Series will also receive enhanced tape-delayed airings on MAVTV for a scheduled total of six network television programs.

The season opener for the Mid-West Drag Racing Series is on March 19-20 at Xtreme Raceway Park in Ferris, TX.  Friday’s qualifying and Saturday’s elimination rounds will be shown live on MAVTV Plus.

MAVTV Plus is built on the foundation established by Lucas Oil Racing TV and replaces the latter, effective immediately. The rebrand of the digital service will be seamless to subscribers, who will continue to receive access to a uniquely diverse collection of automotive and racing content catered directly to enthusiasts, including the ARCA Menards Series, GNCC Racing Series, Late Model Dirt Series, Pro Pulling League, ASCS Sprint Car Series, POWRi Racing and much more. Hill Looks to Mount a Comeback in 100th Truck Series Start at LVMS

Wednesday, Mar 03
Hitting the Century Mark … Austin Hill will hit the century mark and make his 100th career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start on Friday night at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS). The driver of the No. 16 Ibaraki Toyopet Toyota Tundra is reaching the career milestone in his 49th start with HRE and comes at one of his most successful venues. Hill has pulled into victory lane in two of the last three Camping World Trucks events in “Sin City” and a third victory in the desert would come at the perfect time for he and the No. 16 team. Hill has collected 18 of his 19th career top-five finishes with HRE and 30 of his 38-career top-10’s during that span, including all six of his Camping World Trucks victories.

Time for a Comeback … The 2020 regular season champion was handed two finishes outside the top-20 to start the season at Daytona International Speedway, but is ready to mount a comeback beginning at LVMS. Hill began last season with seven consecutive top-10 finishes which fixed him atop the series standings, including a third-place finish in the first event at LVMS. He looks to restart a similar streak and establish a resilient comeback to climb back into the championship conversation at his most fruitful venue.

Las Vegas History … Six of Hill’s previous 99 Camping World Trucks starts have come on LVMS’ 1.5-mile high banks. The Winston, Ga. native has two victories at LVMS, including two of the three most recent events in “Sin City” with four top-10 finishes. Since suffering an overheating issue in his first start in Las Vegas with HRE, Hill has an average finish of 1.67 in the last three races at LVMS. Continuing that string of results could vault Hill up the championship standings as he currently sits just 19 points out of 10th.

Chassis Selection … Crew chief Scott Zipadelli and the Ibaraki Toyopet team elected to race chassis No. 010 for the first intermediate track of the 2021 season. Hill most recently raced this chassis at Bristol Motor Speedway last September and has since been updated and outfitted with a new Toyota Tundra body. Hill piloted this truck to victory lane at LVMS in September 2019 by leading 29 of the 134 laps.

Tune In … The third event on the ’21 Camping World Trucks slate will be carried live on FOX Sports 1 at 9:00 p.m. ET, while coverage begins at 8:00 p.m. ET with NASCAR Raceday. Stay connected with the No. 16 Ibaraki Toyopet team by following @Hattori_Racing on Twitter, @hattoriracing on Instagram, and Hattori Racing Enterprises on Facebook.

Austin Hill Quote:
On making his 100th start at Las Vegas:
“It’s a pretty cool milestone to hit 100 starts in the series. That means a lot to be in the series for that long and have opportunities to drive fast trucks every week. There’s a lot of other people that have put in a lot of effort over the years to make that happen, especially all the guys at HRE and Ibaraki Toyopet this weekend. We’ve had extremely fast Tundras every time that we’ve gone to Las Vegas and have had a ton of success. This is the same truck that we won with in 2019 and ran third with last spring. Hopefully we can have a similar result on Friday night. We didn’t get the results we wanted in the first two races at Daytona, but every one of us is looking forward to turning that around this week and hopefully we can get Ibaraki Toyopet into victory lane for the first time.”

Chandler Smith - No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass Tundra Camping World Trucks Las Vegas Preview

Wednesday, Mar 03
Mr. Smith Goes to Vegas:

  • Chandler Smith and the No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass team head to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the first mile-and-a-half race on the Camping World Truck Series schedule this season. Running a partial schedule last season, Smith made four starts on 1.5-mile tracks, earning a best result of fifth twice, including the September event at Las Vegas.

  • Smith is off to a solid start in his rookie Camping World Trucks Campaign. He sits fourth in the championship standings, 30 tallies behind points leader Ben Rhodes, after finishing ninth at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway and 12th at the Daytona Road Course. His average finish of 10.5 is not indicative of his performance in the first two events, his average running position so far this season is 8.31 and he has scored points in three of the four stages.

  • The 18-year-old Georgia native will compete for the Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award in 2021 after competing in a part-time schedule for KBM each of the last two seasons. Smith earned the Sunoco Rookie of the Race Award at the Daytona Road Course and after two events leads the rookie standings by 30 points over Carson Hocevar.

  • The Toyota Development Driver has finished inside the top five in eight of his 18 career Camping World Truck Series starts, including a career-best runner-up finish at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway in 2019. Smith posted an average finish of 7.7 across his final seven of 12 total Truck Series starts in 2020, including third-place finishes in the series finale at Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway and his first career superspeedway start at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway in October.

  • The talented teenager recorded nine wins, 10 poles and an average finish of 5.3 across 33 ARCA Menards Series starts the last three seasons. He captured the pole in his series debut at Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville (Tenn.) in April of 2018 and set an ARCA Menards Series record by winning four consecutive poles to start his career. He earned his first victory at Madison (Wis.) International Speedway in just his fourth series start in June of 2018. Despite running a part-time schedule, he led the series in laps led in both 2018 and 2019.

  • Veteran crew chief Danny Stockman will call the shots for Smith and the No. 18 team this season. Stockman led the No. 51 team to four wins in his first season atop the pit box at KBM in 2020. He came to the organization with experience as a crew chief in all three national series, including a Truck Series championship with Austin Dillon in 2011 and an XFINITY Series championship with Dillon in 2013. Stockman’s XFINITY Series drivers totaled seven wins and 19 poles from 2012 to 2018 and after last season his Truck Series totals stand at eight wins and 13 poles.

  • Stockman guided KBM owner-driver Kyle Busch to a dominant victory in last year’s Camping World Trucks event at Las Vegas. He also was victorious with Dillon in 2010 at the Nevada track.

  • Safelite AutoGlass - the nation’s largest provider of vehicle glass repair, replacement, and recalibration services – will be the primary sponsor of Smith’s Tundra for 15 races this season. Safelite will be back on the No. 18 Toyota when the Camping World Truck Series resumes action March 20 at Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway.

Chandler Smith, Driver Q&A:

How much of a challenge was it last year learning to race on the mile-and-a-half tracks?
“It’s definitely a learning curve and something new to learn. I feel like myself as a driver that I have gotten better at them, but there is still room for improvement. Overall, as an organization, I feel like our entire 1.5-mile program has gotten stronger. I’m looking forward to it.”

Las Vegas is the first mile-and-a-half track that you are going to for a second time. Does that boost your confidence?
“I’ve raced at Las Vegas once and we had a strong finish at the end coming out fifth. We’re going back with a similar package, so I’m ready for it. It’s going to be a little cooler. It’s my second time going back, so I’m expecting good results in our Safelite Tundra and hopefully we can bring home the trophy.”

Are you looking forward to racing against Kyle for the first time in the Camping World Truck Series?
“I’ve raced against Kyle in Super Late Models and learned a tremendous amount from racing against him there. I feel like I am going to get the same results when it comes to truck racing. Obviously, the bigger picture is to come out and beat him. I would love nothing more than that, so that is the goal.”

Chandler Smith Career Highlights:

  • Across 18 career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts has recorded 115 laps led, eight top-five and 10 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 12.1.
  • Posted an average finish of 7.7 across his final seven of 12 total Truck Series starts in 2020, including third-place finishes in the series finale at Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway and his first career superspeedway start at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway in October.
  • Produced three top-five and four top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 4.2 across his first four career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts in 2019. He led 55 laps and finished eighth in his Gander Trucks debut at Iowa Speedway last July and then posted top-five finishes in his final three starts, including a runner-up finish at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.
  • Has collected nine wins, 10 poles, 1761 laps led, 22 top-five and 29 top-10 finishes en route to an average finish of 5.2 across 33 career ARCA Menards Series starts. Set an ARCA Racing Series record by winning four consecutive poles to start his career and earned his first victory after leading a race-high 102 laps at Madison (Wis.) International Speedway in his fourth series start.

Chandler Smith's No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass Tundra:

KBM-070: The No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass team will unload chassis number KBM-070, a brand new Tundra, for Friday night’s Bucked up 200 at Las Vegas.

KBM Notes of Interest:

  • KBM drivers have collected four wins, four poles, 12 top-five and 19 top-10 finishes across 36 starts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. They have earned a collective average starting position of 7.9 an average finish of 12.2 and have led 540 laps.
  • Erik Jones won the 2014 event while owner-driver Kyle Busch won in the spring of 2018, 2019 and 2020.
  • KBM holds the Camping World Truck Series records for most career wins (80) and most wins in a single season (14 in 2014). In addition to collecting a series-record seven Owner's Championships, the organization has produced two championship-winning drivers: Erik Jones (2015) and Christopher Bell (2017).
  • The No. 18, the number which was on the first Tundra that went to victory lane for KBM in 2010, has 21 career victories.

Francesco Garisto back with 42 Racing to chase EuroNASCAR 2 title

Wednesday, Mar 03

42 Racing and Italian talent Francesco Garisto announced today an extension of their agreement to compete in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series in the 2021 season. After making his NWES debut with the Swiss team in 2020 through the NWES Drivers Recruitment Program, Garisto will chase the EuroNASCAR 2 at the wheel of the #42 42 Racing Mustang.

“I’m thrilled to announce my deal with 42 Racing to extend our contract for the 2021 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series! We’ve worked hard to make this possible and we’re currently giving our best to get to Valencia as competitive as possible. My learning curve has grown exponentially during the 2020 season and I didn’t expect to have the competitiveness to fight for top spots,” said Garisto. “This year I will race to win, we know we can do it and we know we have the potential to end up on top. I will put my heart, soul, strength and mental attitude into the fight for the championship crown.”

The 18-year-old Italian finished 9th in points in 2020 in the EuroNASCAR 2 championship with 7 top-10s. The best result of the season for Garisto and 42 Racing came at Circuit Zolder, in the second event of the season, when he climbed on the third step of the podium. The team couldn’t travel to Grobnik and Valencia due to Covid-related problems, but they are ready to get back on track and prepare the May 15-16 Valencia season opener, with the plan to field once again two cars on the NWES grid.

“We are very happy to continue the journey in the NWES championship with Francesco, after working with him since October 2019, when we prepared together his participation in the NWES Drivers Recruitment Program. Francesco distinguished himself on the occasion, received  support to participate in the 2020 NWES season and the Zolder podium was a well deserved moment of glory,” said Marco Raggi, 42 Racing’s Team Principal. “In 2021 we expect to reap the benefits of what was sowed in the past season. The contenders are many and competitive, but Francesco proved he can carve out a space in the top positions. On our side, during the winter we completely rebuilt our two cars to leave no stone unturned and give Francesco and all our drivers the best equipment."

Garisto can’t wait to return to action and put his rookie year experience to good use. In the meantime, the Italian is racing in the EuroNASCAR Esports Series.

“During my first year in EuroNASCAR I had the chance to get to know many drivers and team members from all over the world and what I’ve always appreciated is the mutual respect among all competitors. This is something I always liked about this sport. I’m super pumped up and I’m really looking forward to getting back behind the wheel and having some close racing!”

The NWES season will begin on May 15-16 at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia, Spain with the 2021 edition of the Valencia NASCAR Fest.

QUICK HITS

Jared Fryar Returns for the Repeat

Defending champion, Jared Fryar will once again drive for Jimmy Mooring in 2021 and will look to defend his championship title from a season ago. The Trinity, North Carolina driver used consistency and a return to Edelbrock Victory Lane (Franklin County) for the first time since 2017 to capture the title. While the upcoming 2021 schedule has several familiar tracks, multiple new facilities could challenge Fryar this season. Fryar will entire the season opener as the championship favorite over fellow competitors Layne Riggs and Bobby McCarty.

Out with the Old and in with the New

Changing up the competition this season, there are drivers that won’t compete full time with the tour in 2021. Josh Berry, Ronald Hill, and Chad McCumbee won’t be full time with the tour, but we can expect these familiar names to return to the schedule at some point throughout the season. We can expect greatness from other competitors this season, as they have been watching and learning from these veterans for years.

While a few veterans will be absent, there are several series newcomers and multiple drivers who will compete for the R&S Racecars Rookie of the Year title this season. Multi-time Myrtle Beach Speedway track champion, Sam Yarbrough will take over the ride vacated by McCumbee, driving Robert Elliott’s #95 machine. The 2016 Martinsville 300 winner, Mike Looney will compete for the series title with backing from Harrion’s Workwear in 2021. Youngsters Joe Valento, Connor Jones, Kaden Honeycutt, and Daniel Silvestri will all get their first taste of tour action this weekend at Dillon.

Debut at Dillon – What to Expect?

For the first time in seven seasons, the Solid Rock Carriers CARS Tour will race at Ron Barfield’s Dillon Motor Speedway located just off Interstate 95 in Dillon, South Carolina. The 4/10 mile track presents long straights with 14 degree banked turns. Turns one and two are quicker and sweeping, while three and four are abrupt with the turn four wall easily met upon exit to the flag stand. Much like other tracks in the sandy region of South Carolina, Dillon will be hard on tire wear. Teams that can manage tires for the duration of the race will be the ones up front as the laps wind down. The other key factor at the facility is keeping the racing clean, especially off the exit of turn four. The front straight away is narrow compared to most facilities, thus creating easy chaos if more than a few cars find trouble at once.

The Solid Rock Carriers CARS Tour is one of the premier short track series in the United States. Drivers compete in Late Model Stock Cars and Super Late Models at the best short tracks across the Carolinas, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia. The CARS Tour can be found on Facebook at “CARS Tour”, on Twitter @CARSTour, and on Instagram as @CARS_Tour. For more information, visit www.carsracingtour.com or call their Mooresville, N.C. offices at 704.662.9212.

DGR NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Race Advance: Las Vegas

Tuesday, Mar 02

Hailie Deegan, No. 1 Toter Ford F-150

  • Deegan makes her third start of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) season in the No. 1 Toter Ford F-150 on Friday night at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS).
  • Deegan has two starts at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Dirt Track, located just outside the paved oval. In 2018, she started on the pole position and finished runner-up in the 102-lap event. In 2019, the California native started eighth and led the final lap en route to earn her first of two K&N Pro Series West victories that season.
  • LVMS is the first 1.5-mile track of the season for the NCWTS. The mile-and-a-half tracks are the bread-and-butter of the series schedule and Deegan has one previous Truck Series start on an intermediate track. In October of last year at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Deegan made her first career NCWTS start and finished 16th.
  • Two weeks ago at the Daytona Road Course, Deegan was in position to finish in the top-10 when contact on the last restart with another truck caused a tire to go down and relegated her to a 28th-place finish.
  • Veteran crew chief Mike Hillman Jr. has 23 wins in the NCWTS, including two at Las Vegas - Todd Bodine in September 2005 and Kyle Busch in March 2018.
  • Click here for Deegan's career statistics.

Deegan Quotes:

How much has your relationship with Ford helped you on the track?

“I'm so thankful for Ford and the resources they've given me. As a rookie driver in the Truck Series, I don't have a lot knowledge on how these trucks handle. I can do the best I can with watching film and things like that, but when it comes to getting time in the Ford Simulator, that has been a critical part of my development, without that, I would be nowhere near where I am now."

We hear a lot about the simulator, how realistic is it?

"It's crazy how realistic the simulator is. I go there with my engineer and crew chief and we put our race setups in there and it gives us the ability to test a lot of different things since we can't go to actual tracks to test. Having the simulator as a resource is a huge opportunity for me.”

Any hobbies outside of racing?

"Really, racing is my life so I keep busy with that. I have a YouTube channel and run my merchandise line and that takes up a lot of my time. I spend a lot of time at the shop to build relationships with the crew guys and getting to know them. I'm trying to further my career development and not get distracted with a bunch of other things."

For her vlog, Deegan chronicled her trip to the second Truck Series race of the season at the Daytona Road Course. Click the image to view the episode.

Tanner Gray, No. 15 Ford Performance F-150

  • Statistically, Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS) has been one of the best tracks on the circuit for Gray with an average finish of 5.5 in his two career starts there with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.
  • In 2020, the west coast driver earned his first career top-10 in the second race of the season at LVMS by finishing eighth. He followed that up in the fall return to the 1.5-mile tri-oval by advancing from his 12th-place starting position to finish third.
  • Dating back to 2000, crew chief Shane Wilson has been atop the pit box for 24 races at LVMS across the three NASCAR national series' and the K&N Pro Series West. In those events he has five top-fives and 13 top-10s including two wins with Brendan Gaughan: October 13, 2001 in the K&N Pro Series West and September 27, 2003 in the Truck Series.
  • Click here for Gray's career statistics.

Gray on Las Vegas:

Two of your best finishes last season came at Las Vegas. Does that give you a renewed sense of confidence after a rough couple weeks in Daytona?

"No doubt. For whatever reason, Las Vegas has been one of the tracks that I have run really good at so far. We have had a rough stretch of luck to start the season, so it's refreshing to be headed to a track where I feel like we can turn our luck around and get a good finish."

David Gilliland, No. 17 DGR Ford F-150

  • Gilliland has 15 career starts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but has only one prior NCWTS start there in 2005, finishing 22nd for Billy Ballew Motorsports. His career best finish at the 1.5-mile race track is a 14th-place effort in the Cup Series in 2009.
  • LVMS is Gilliland's second NCWTS start of the season in the No. 17 F-150. He competed in the season-opening event at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway and finished 14th.
  • The No.17 entry was driven by Las Vegas native Riley Herbst two weeks ago the Daytona Road Course which resulted in a fifth-place finish.
