Jonathan Findley Ready To Honor Davey Allison In Throwback 276

When it came time for Jonathan Findley and his family to decide who they would honor with a throwback scheme during the upcoming Throwback 276 at North Carolina’s Hickory Motor Speedway, the choice was obvious.

Findley will honor late NASCAR Hall of Famer Davey Allison when the CARS Tour invades Hickory Motor Speedway for the third edition of the popular Throwback 276 on Saturday, Aug. 3. The design of Findley’s No. 28 Ford will mirror that of the car Allison drove during the 1991 through 1993 NASCAR Cup Series seasons.
 
The choice to honor Allison is thanks in large part to Findley’s grandfather and car owner, John Findley, who was a fan of both Bobby and Davey Allison during the 1980s and 1990s.
 
“We really wanted to run a black throwback car at Hickory, so when it came time to actually choose the design of the car I really thought it would be nice to honor one of my Granddad’s favorites,” said the younger Findley. “He’s done so much for me and without him I wouldn’t be driving a race car, so I’m glad I could do this as a thank you to him.”
 
A member of the famed Alabama Gang, Davey Allison began his full-time NASCAR Cup Series career in 1987. He won two races as a rookie that year and soon established himself as one of the most popular drivers in NASCAR.
 
In a career that included 191 NASCAR Cup Series starts, Allison earned 19 victories and best finish of third in the series standings on two occasions. Among those triumphs were the 1991 Coca-Cola 600 and the 1992 Daytona 500. He also won The Winston, NASCAR’s all-star race, in 1991 and 1992.
 
Allison’s life was tragically cut short when he was killed in a helicopter crash midway through the 1993 NASCAR Cup Series season.
 
“It’s a shame we lost Davey when we did, because he was going to be one of the best NASCAR had ever seen,” said John Findley, the car owner and Jonathan Findley’s grandfather. “I’m so proud Jonathan decided to honor Davey during the Throwback 276. It means the world to me and it’ll be amazing to see my grandson driving a car like the one Davey once drove.
 
“It’s absolutely incredible.”
 
Jonathan Findley, in his first full-time season racing with the CARS Tour, said that none of this would be possible without the love and support from his family.
 
“My entire family, my mom, stepdad, grandma and grandpa, have all had to make sacrifices to allow me to do this,” Findley said. “I just want to go out there and make them all proud. Hopefully we can do that at Hickory during the Throwback 276.”
